HRCS and Urban Assembly Schools Partner for Summer Program
Above: HRCS Internship Director Spencer Merlis speaks with students from the Urban Assembly Bronx Academy of Letters about the Summer Leadership Program.
The Urban Assembly (UA) network of schools has partnered with HRCS to provide hundreds of New York City public school students the opportunity to develop their leadership, teamwork, and communication skills and earn a physical education credit while engaging in the medium of sailing on the Hudson River. The Urban Assembly network consists of 22 middle and high schools scattered throughout the five boroughs. Urban Assembly schools are unique in that they are theme-based (business, government, law, maritime), provide highly-focused mentoring, and enable students to have a variety of real world opportunities through their many partnerships. Over the months of March and April, members of the HRCS staff will visit nearly all the UA schools to present the Summer Leadership Program to students and allow them to apply. The Summer Leadership Program runs for four weeks over the summer and provides the opportunity for young people in our partner schools to access our waterways and challenge themselves in a unique, enriching way. HRCS Fleet Almost Ready to Splash
Before you read the next issue of this newsletter, the entire HRCS fleet will be in the water at Pier 66. HRCS staff and volunteers are currently putting the finishing touches on the boats at SUNY Maritime. Within the next week, half the fleet will be put in the water to be water-tested and have their rigs tuned. Stay tuned for pictures from the adventure down the East River and through Hells Gate.
