Greetings! Top

As the winter begins to drag on, we want to remind all of our friends of Hudson River Community Sailing that we are hard at work to make 2010 the best year for HRCS yet.  As the cold wind nips at your ears and scenes like this (picture below) clog your view, remember, the days are getting longer, the temperature is getting warmer, and each day we get closer to sailing at HRCS again.

Hopefully this newsletter brings warm thoughts to your heart and gets you as excited as we are for the 2010 season!

HRCS New Site Up and Running

The new site is now live and we are very excited for the new look!  The new pages will be much more organized with many more pictures and videos.  Within the next week or so, visitors to the site will also be able to purchase a Taste of Sailing lesson, a Basic Keelboat Certification Course, and sign up for the Summer Sailing Academy right on the site!  Stay tuned and keep checking the site for other updates.  Check out the new site here.
HRCS and National Sailing Hall of Fame Forge Partnership
NSHOF logo
HRCS and the National Sailing Hall of Fame (NSHOF) have teamed up to bring the successful Accredited After School Program (AASP) to schools and sailing centers around the country.  Annapolis, Maryland, the home base of the NSHOF, has been selected as the first city to pilot the program outside of New York City.  This is a really exciting opportunity for HRCS.  It gives our scope of programming a national platform to engage young people in the exciting sport of sailing while enabling them to earn much-needed math credits towards their high school graduation.  Check us out on the NSHOF education page!

Other Youth Programs News
Landmark High School, located in Chelsea, has been selected as the newest school to be a part of the Accredited After School Program (AASP).  Landmark High School, with an enrollment of 450, serves grades 9-12 and is a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools - a network of schools focused on creating personalized, equitable, and intellectually challenging schools.  There are now three different high schools that make up the AASP - The James Baldwin School, Humanities Preparatory Academy, and Landmark High School.    The Accredited After School Program uses sailing as a learning medium to make math more interesting and accessible to public high school students in New York City.  We are excited to welcome a new group of students into the program.  Learn more about the program here.

Summer Leadership Program

In the next month, thousands of public high school students will learn about the exciting Summer Leadership Program.  Unfortunately, only 64 lucky students among them will be chosen to be part of the four-week 2010 program.  To find this select group, HRCS will be presenting the program at high schools and middle schools all over New York City in hopes of gleaning the most promising students the city has to offer.  In the past, the SLP was only open to HRCS' partner programs who brought their own students to Pier 66 for a week of sailing.  With the move to open enrollment, HRCS will have its own group of students who we will work with over a full week on development in leadership, teamwork, and communication skills as well as sailing.  In March, we will let you know what schools this group hails from.  For more information on the SLP, click here.

Fleet Looking Better than Ever

The HRCS staff and volunteers continue to put in long hours to make sure the HRCS fleet is in tip-top shape come April.  From painting the sides to repairing the decks, the group has been kept busy since December.  If you've been on an HRCS boat before, you will not even recognize these boats - they look that good!  Thanks go out to HRCS member Mark Napoletano for volunteering much of his time to help in the effort.
