Is There A Right and Wrong Way To Read?

Greetings!
 
Often when I tell people that I have a Master's Degree in the Teaching of Reading, the nonverbal reaction is one of surprise followed by the question, "What do you, read books all day?" 
 
What really constitutes the process of Reading?   Many people take for granted the many layers that come together in this "simple" act of reading. 

word buildingEarly readers must de-code the symbols on the page into known sounds, blend the individual sounds together, and form words.  These individual words must then be recognized for their meanings, independently and as a whole in each phrase and/or sentence.  As readers advance in their ability to comprehend progressively more difficult texts, higher level thinking is essential to understand figurative language, decipher grammatical variations, and read in multiple meanings of sentences.


Given there are many factors that play into reading, there are areas in which even good readers can grow.  Research says that one way good readers monitor their comprehension is by stopping to ask themselves questions as they read. 

Through the next year I will be highlighting some reading comprehension strategies that can be used to help  
  • activate knowledge prior to reading
  • engage the reader during the process of reading
  • assist in reflection on the content after reading

Staff Profile:  Judy Martin

JudyJudy Martin joined The Davidson Center in January, 2000 four months after its opening.

 

She recently retired from public schools having been a teacher for 13 years and an instructional assistant for 21 years.  Judy is also trained in Orton-Gillingham, a multisensory approach to reading and writing.  This approach is especially beneficial for students with learning disabilities.

  

Judy loves meeting and working with new families.
