The Orton Gillingham Approach

The use of the Orton-Gillingham approach by a knowledgeable and experienced teacher can significantly moderate the language learning and processing problems that arise from dyslexia.

The Orton-Gillingham approach is language-based, multisensory, structured, sequential, cumulative, cognitive, and flexible. Students experience a high degree of success and gain confidence as well as skills. Learning becomes a rewarding and happy experience.

The explicit focus of the approach has been and continues to be upon persons with the kinds of language processing problems associated with dyslexia.

Early intervention is highly desirable, but it is never too late to begin!

Evaluations and Specialized Services
Ed EvalsThe Davidson Center for Learning has developed an innovative approach for children with special challenges who are struggling in school and/or at home. Our comprehensive evaluation identifies the barriers to your child's learning and performance: intellectual, academic, social, emotional, and attention-related.

After thorough assessments by a highly qualified psychologist and academic specialist, our team will develop and implement a customized plan of intervention in a supportive and nurturing environment. (An analysis of evaluations completed elsewhere also can be utilized.) The customized treatment plan may include remedial instruction in reading, writing and math; educational therapy; and/or advising for appropriate school or program placement.

Dr. Gary Patrick

Gary L. Patrick, Ph.D. has worked with children for more than thirty years initially as a teacher of children with learning disabilities and then as a psychologist. In addition to doctoral training in school and community psychology, he has also had formal education in special education and speech and language as well as the unique opportunity to complete his dissertation in the vision training practice of a past president of the American Optometric Association. He has also studied teaching approaches for those with learning problems in the Scandinavian countries, and he completed a practicum experience in a German school for those with learning disabilities.

His unique educational experiences have been employed in providing and supervising school psychology services for a number of school systems, assisting in the development of a child and family development center, and engaging privately with individuals, schools, and learning centers. He has worked with a wide range of handicapped children and adolescents in a variety of settings.

He has recently coauthored a book with Rosanne Manus to assist parents to be more effective in helping their children to learn. The title is Tackling Academic Barriers: A Guide to Choosing the Right Professionals to Help Your Child Learn. He sincerely hopes that their insights into child learning and learning problems can assist parents to develop a better understanding of the complexities of learning and to find professionals who can help their children.
