Did you know that there are more than 600 miles of trails in the Roanoke Region?

Why not help add a few more!

This week is National Take a Child Outside Week. How are you getting your kids outside this week?

I can't think of a better way than to involve your kids with National Public Lands Day (which is Saturday).

National Public Lands Day (NPLD), the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2011, 170,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants, planted trees and restored our water resources.

There are several projects happening that you can participate in.
  • Trail work at Carvins Cove, the A.T., and Smith Mountain Lake
  • Litter clean up at Philpott Reservoir and Smith Mountain Lake

But if for some reason you can't motivate your kids to shovel some dirt, how about a nice hike. Join the A.T. Family Hike Day, also on Saturday.

GO FEST partnered with the Music Lab at Jefferson Center for your listening enjoyment. Check Lenosky out at a scheduled showtime - Friday at 5:30 and
7 p.m.; Saturday at noon, 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; or Sunday at noon

GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY AND HELP PUBLIC LANDS
Give something back on Saturday as part of National Public Lands Day, when more than 170,000 volunteers nationwide are expected to take part in projects at parks, gardens, beaches, and forests.

This year there are several projects happening that you can participate in around the Roanoke Region.

NPLD began in 1994 with three sites; now there are events in every state. The event last year contributed an estimated $17 million in volunteer services to public lands, which include planting about 100,000 trees, shrubs and other native plants, as well as building and maintaining approximately 1,500 miles of trails.
