A lot of people think Explore Park is closed. Let's put some rumors to rest -- Explore Park is open, just not 100 percent.

Located at milepost 115 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Explore Park's 1,100 acres provide nature lovers the opportunity to enjoy nature's beauty and wildlife while hiking, mountain biking, or just strolling through the woods. The park's IMBA-sanctioned 9 miles of mountain bike trails, a one-mile Foresters Interpretive Trail, and Rutrough Point on the Roanoke River are open for your enjoyment. Fishing, canoeing, and kayaking on the Roanoke River can be accessed at Explore Park's Rutrough Point at the end of Rutrough Road (which has a brand new put in/take out).

The outdoor areas are open year-round for your outdoor fun, the historical buildings and villages are not currently open.

This Saturday is a great day to explore Explore Park as you'll be rewarded with a bluegrass concert from 5 to 8 p.m.

COUNTING THE DAYS UNTIL GO FEST

We are super excited about this year's Roanoke GO Outside Festival.

Really, really excited.

The festival, presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, is a FREE, three-day event celebrating everything outdoors, Oct. 19-21 at Rivers Edge.

There will be more activities than you can do in three days - camping, biking, boating, races, geocaching, and more - and you can participate in demos, try out new gear and camp out all weekend. (And did we mention it is free?)

Plus there will be plenty of food, live music, and activities for the kids. This isn't your ordinary sit-in-your seat kind of event -- you're encouraged to get involved. Walk around, touch gear, try stuff out, and above all, have fun.

The daily schedule is posted on the GO FEST website, with activities and demos still being added. Some of the highlights include bike demos, boat demos, Sierra Nevada Torpedo Race, SUP simulator, KEEN Photo Booth, bike trials pro athlete, slacklining, flyball, fly fishing casting, disc golf, stand up paddle board demo, Huffy bike toss, a climbing wall, and lots of clinics.

This year's vendors include KEEN Footwear, Sierra Nevada, Gibbon Slacklines, Mountain Khakis, Ruff Wear, Cardinal Bicycles, NOLS, Bellyak, Subaru, Innova Discs, Walkabout Outfitter, Sylvan Sport Trailers, Fleet Feet, East Coasters, Take A Hike GPS, Specialized Bicycles, and many more.

You don't want to miss it!

GO FEST:

  • Dates: Oct. 19-21 (gates open at 5 p.m. on Friday)
  • Location: River Edge Sports Complex, Roanoke
  • Cost: Free
  • Activities: Camping, music, free demos, disc golf, geocaching, kayaking, running and more

BALANCING ACT COMING TO GO FEST

GO FEST You might have seen them during the Super Bowl halftime show, late at night with Conan O'Brien, or on Good Morning America. Now you can see them live in Roanoke. Gibbon Slacklines will host pro demos during the Roanoke GO Outside Festival in October.

Not only will Gibbon have lines set up for demos, there will be lines set up that you can test your balance on all weekend long during GO FEST, a free festival celebrating the outdoors Oct. 19-21 at Rivers Edge. Mark your calendars and plan to come watch the pros balance and then try it for yourself.

SIT, STAY, JUMP WITH YOUR DOG AT GO FEST
GO FEST Does your dog like the water? Bring your pooch (on a leash, of course) to GO FEST in October for the Subaru Ultimate Air Dogs Premier Dock Jumping contest (presented by First Team Subaru and Walkabout Outfitter).

Leading the charge for Subaru Ultimate Air Dogs is UAD president and main announcer, Milt Wilcox, former pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. Milt is famous for winning Game 3 of the 1984 World Series. His charismatic emceeing is as entertaining as watching the high flying dogs.
