PETE'S PICKS

There is a reason FloydFest was voted "Best Outdoor Festival" by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine - it's simply an incredible experience you don't want to miss. It's much more than just a music festival - four days of camping (if you want to), more than 100 performers on 10 music stages, beer and wine gardens, performance art, global village, kids' universe, craft workshops, trapeze school, disc golf, mountain bike trail, and lots more.
Roanoke Outside will have a tent set up (Global Village area) and hope you'll come join us. If you can't make the entire four days you're in luck - a limited number of single day tickets just went up for sale.
But if you can't make FloydFest (or it isn't your cup of tea) then check out the Touch-a-Truck event on Saturday. If you have little kids, or just an infatuation with unique vehicles, then be sure to check it out.

WIN MICROFESTIVUS VIP PASS & DRINK FREE BEER
The Square Society presents the 15th annual Microfestivus, a micro and craft beer festival on Aug. 11 at Elmwood Park. Taste from a selection of more than 100 beers from over two dozen micro and craft breweries from the Mid-Atlantic region. Beer tastings are in 4 oz., 8 oz. and 12 oz. sizes, served in a souvenir glass. You must be at least 21 with a valid ID to attend. It's $5 to get in but that doesn't get you any beer. There are a variety of "tasting packages" available. Purchase tickets online (you can also purchase at the event but you'll be stuck in line while the rest of the smart people are already "tasting").
Roanoke Outside will have a tent set up - be sure to stop by and say hello. We love beer and are excited to offer you a chance to WIN A VIP PASS. VIP admission includes 20 servings, VIP tent access to catered food, drinks, and more! Enter the giveaway >>>

HELP KIVA EARN $5,000 GRANT
You can help Roanoke Kids in the Valley, Adventuring earn $5,000 to buy camping supplies with just a few clicks.
Join the KIVA Good Maker campaign and cast your vote through Aug. 3. The top idea of the 115 in the campaign will earn the grant, so every vote counts. (KIVA is currently in the top 25.)
If awarded, KIVA would use the grant to help buy camping supplies that families in need could borrow for overnight hikes. The group plans to create a checkout system for gear and the grant would also help purchase a set of teaching materials for outings.
KIVA, started in 2008 by Chip and Ashley Donahue, is a free nature club for families in the Roanoke Valley. The group invites families to join up at parks and trails and encourages families to learn Leave No Trace principles on overnight hikes.
The next hike is coming up Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fishburn Park. You can keep up with all of group's upcoming events on their website or Twitter.

GET READY FOR WINTER VACATION NOW
It may be hot outside today, but it is not too early to start planning a winter vacation.
The Roanoke Ski Club recently announced the trip schedule and there are plenty of great trips and opportunities to hit the slopes starting in September.
The calendar this year includes three trips Colorado, and visits to Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming. The shortest trip is in January, when the group will visit the Timberline Four Season Resort in Davis, W.Va.
And cost ... we'll go as far as to say that there is pretty much no way you could do any of these trips at the costs the club puts together. Rates are so low that people that don't even ski will go on the trips.
The Roanoke Ski Club participates in local activities as well throughout the year, including whitewater rafting, hiking, canoeing, and happy hour gatherings. The club has been active in Roanoke since 1963.
Membership is open to individuals and families and applications are available online. You can also connect with the club on Facebook.

SECRET TRACKER FINDS STOLEN BIKES
By Yi Chen for PSFK
A new device combines both security and a GPS in the event your bike is stolen. According to the National Bike Registry, the estimated cost of bikes being stolen each year in the U.S. alone is around $200 million. A lock reduces the chance of theft, but it doesn't fully protect the bike against professional thieves. This is where the SpyBike Covert Bicycle GPS Tracker comes in to give bike owners a complete piece of mind. The SpyBike set comes with a small GPS tracker that can be discreetly mounted on a bike. This is accompanied by an electronic key ring that can deactivate the tracker. When the tracker is still activated, it can detect vibrations such as movements. As long as the tracker detects vibrations, the system will then send an SMS alert to the user with the location coordinates every 20 seconds.
The SpyBike system costs around $150.
