PETE'S PICKS
2012 marathon logoDang it's hot out there ... so my recommendation this week includes a little more of a drive and rewards a short 30- to 40-minute hike with an amazing view.

If you've never been to Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory, this is the trip for you. The observatory is located along the West Virginia-Virginia border and is worth the ride. (Some photos from the observatory are sure to convince you.)

Here's my recommended itinerary:
  • Take Rt. 311N. from Roanoke (through Catawba and New Castle) to the tiny town of Paint Bank and have lunch at the Swinging Bridge Restaurant.
  • After lunch, continue on to the Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory. (You can find directions here.)
  • For your return trip, pull out your gazetteer and choose a route home that takes you on some back roads.
  • If you're looking for a place to cool off, swing by Steel Bridge Campground near Paint Bank. Potts Creek runs through the well-shaded campground.

A MOVIE AND SHOPPING SPREE IN THE NAME OF CYCLING

July is East Coasters' Ride Local Month and what better way to celebrate than with a bicycling film and a raffle for a $500 shopping spree?

"Reveal the Path" is an adventure film that contemplates what it means to live an inspired life using the bicycle as a mechanism to explore, dream and discover. Ride along and get lost in Scotland, Morocco, Nepal, and Alaska in a movie that was filmed across four continents.

"Reveal the Path" is showing Wednesday, July 11, at The Shadowbox in downtown Roanoke. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., tickets are $2 at the door, and proceeds will go to Roanoke IMBA.

Also make sure to buy a ticket for the East Coasters raffle going on this month. Each East Coasters' location is raffling a $500 store shopping spree. Proceeds from the raffle will support the "Bridge the Gap" campaign, which is working to raise $7 million to complete 4.1 miles of the Roanoke River Greenway from Bridge Street in Roanoke to Rotary Park in Salem, as well as Friends of the Huckleberry trail in the New River Valley.

The big month for East Coasters does not stop there. They are also hosting Dirty Dawg Mountain Bike Races on July 21 and 22 and donating $5 for every mountain bike sold this month to Roanoke IMBA and $5 for every road and hybrid bike sold to local greenways.

It is a great month to enjoy cycling!

COOKING FOR A CROWD? TRY COOLER CORN
By Scott DeSimon for Bon Appetit

Am I the only person who hasn't heard of "cooler corn"?

As an obsessive food nerd, you'd expect that I would have at least heard of it, but I was blindsided by the simple genius of this method for cooking loads of corn on the cob.

Short story: We like corn on the cob. And with eight adults at the table, that means a couple of dozen ears. We would have used the lobster pot to cook them all, but the lobster pot was busy steaming lobster. Then my sister, a capable Maine cook with years of camping experience says "let's do cooler corn!" A Coleman cooler appears from the garage, is wiped clean, and filled with shucked ears. Next, two kettles of boiling water are poured over the corn and the top is closed.

When we sat down to dinner 30 minutes later and opened it, the corn was perfectly cooked.

COOL GEAR: MICRO-BACKPACK

By Sean McCoy for Gear Junkie

Weighing in at just 3 ounces - but touted to be able to carry more than 30 pounds - the just-announced PackBack from Trek Light Gear is a featherweight of a day pack with hidden strength.

Like the company's hammocks and other bag products, the PackBack is made of a parachute nylon that's strong and resistant to mildew and rot. It stuffs into a pouch about the size of a wallet and easily slips into the pocket of your blue jeans.

When unpacked, the stuff sack hangs inside the pack and doubles as a container for valuables such as a cell phone or keys.

Make no mistake, this is a no-frills backpack. It is broken into a main interior compartment and a second smaller compartment that is accessible from outside just behind the wearer's back.

The PackBack is noteworthy mainly for its packability. This is a nice product to have "just in case" during travel or a bike trip, as examples, if you suddenly need capacity to carry a few items on your back.

The PackBack will retail for $26.95 when it hits stores later this summer.
