PETE'S PICKS
2012 marathon logoStart the morning on the lake and finish the afternoon with music, food, and drinks.

You can do it all on Saturday.

Back Country Ski & Sports and Franklin County Parks and Recreation have teamed up to host the first  Smith Mountain Lake Stand Up Paddle Board Race and Demo at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park in Moneta. The race starts at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by a free paddle board demo from 12:30 to 3 p.m. If you want to race, but don't have a SUP, you can borrow a demo board to race with.

Follow the paddle board race with a stop at the  Franklin County String & Spirits Festival in Rocky Mount. The event in its first year has a jam-packed lineup in store. Listen to the sounds of Corey Hunley, Erin Lunsford & the Smokey Bandits, Rootstone Jug Band, Blue Mule, Grass Monkey, and Tara Mills with Strings Attached while sampling food and drink from three local breweries, eight wineries and six food vendors.

Just make sure to pack some sunscreen, as it is going to be a hot one!

All eligible business applicants will be judged by a panel of business experts before grants are awarded.

SUMMER FUN: GEOCACHING
GeocachingGeocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches"). A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets. Geocaching is most often described as a "game of high-tech hide and seek," sharing many aspects with orienteering, treasure-hunting, and waymarking.

First you will need either a GPS receiver or ability to turn your cell phone into a GPS receiver. Many local outdoor stores sell GPS receivers and there are applications you can download directly to your cell phone. Trimble Outdoors has an app for iPhone and Android devices that they are letting people download for free right now.

Geocaching.com is the most popular site for finding caches that are already hidden in your area. A quick search for Roanoke yields more than 350 caches, many of which are surprisingly hidden downtown, but the majority of which are spread throughout the region. Check out the interactive map on Geocaching.com, where you can access details about the hundreds of caches in the Roanoke Region.

FOUR ON THE 4TH RACE RETURNS FOR HOLIDAY
Four on the 4th is back next week with a four-mile run through downtown Roanoke.

The course takes runners (and walkers) through Old Southwest and downtown, along the Roanoke River Greenway and finishes at Wiley Drive. Last year, 270 runners and walkers participated.

Online registration for the second annual race is open through July 2. Prior to race day (July 4), registration is $30, when it increases to $40. The race benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia.

Organizers added a team competition this year. Anyone can make up a team: an organization, a business or just a group of friends who want to run together. Prizes will be awarded for the fastest team, largest team (by number) and most spirited team. No extra fees are involved.

The race starts at 8 a.m., with the awards ceremony following the event at 9:15 a.m. In addition to the team honors, awards will go to the overall top three male and female finishers and the top three male and female masters (age 40 and over). Age group awards will go to the top three male/females in each of the following categories: 13 and under; 14-17; 18-22; 23-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70 and over. Age groups are based on the runner's age as of July 4.

After the race, refreshments will be available in the shaded park at Wiley Drive and Franklin Road.
Volunteer opportunities also are available.

SUPPORT THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY WITH A NEW LICENSE PLATE

Blue Ridge Parkway License Plate Blue Ridge Parkway license plates are available now in Virginia.

The vanity plates -- just one of more than 200 specialty plates out there -- feature blue mountains on a yellow background. Plates can be further customized with up to six characters from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

The plates follow the state's revenue sharing model, meaning that after the sale of 1,000 plates, $15 from the sale of each plate is transferred Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway to support its program to clear scenic overlooks along the parkway in Virginia.

Fees for the plates are $25 annually (in addition to the registration fee) and an extra $10 annually for personalization. Part of the fees may be tax deductible.

You can order plates from the DMV at any time, even if it is not yet time to renew.
