PETE'S PICKS

Pete & Cinder PhotoSince May is Bike Month (click here to see all the bike-related events), most of my recommendations throughout the month are going to be bicycle-related.

First up...biking on the Roanoke River Greenway:

  • A new section opened a few weeks ago, connecting the Roanoke River Greenway to the Tinker Creek Greenway. The bridge across the Roanoke River is well worth the trip. And on May 14 the new section near Black Dog Salvage will be open, giving users 9+ miles of continuous greenway.
  • Rent a bike from UnderDog Bikes or River Greenway Bicycle Rentals and go explore.
  • Pack a picnic and play in the water beneath the bridge connecting Wasena Park with Vic Thomas Park.
  • Bring a trash bag and help keep the greenway clean...if each of us picks up a few pieces of trash while were out the greenway will remain clean for all to enjoy.

Next up...Super Moon Saturday:

  • The moon will appear 14% bigger and 30% brighter Saturday night, which means it's a great opportunity to engage in your favorite outdoor activity under moonlight. One of my most memorable experiences is kayaking the New River Gorge guided only by moonlight. So go for hike, bike, paddle, or even a stroll along the greenway...guarantee you'll like it.

Have a great one and, Get Outside!

WHO WANTS A BACK CREEK GREENWAY?
back creek photovia Dan Casey (Roanoke Times)

"If you travel south on U.S. 221 with any regularity, you're well aware of scars on the southwest Roanoke County landscape from the huge road-straightening project just south of Cave Spring.

Some residents of the area see those considerable changes as an opportunity to launch the Roanoke Valley's next big greenway project.

They envision 5.5 miles of bike lanes and paved paths connecting Cave Spring Middle School with the new South County Library in the Penn Forest neighborhood, an area that has nothing like that now.

In one respect, that's a long-term dream, because building bike lanes and paved paths usually happens at a pace that makes a tortoise look like an Olympic sprinter.

But the centerpiece and linchpin of the prospective greenway is a plot of land that may be within shorter-term reach. It's along a stretch of Back Creek right around the infamous (and soon-to-be history) U.S. 221 S-curves, just north of Cotton Hill Road."

URBAN TREE CANOPY INCREASES

URBAN TREESRecently released data indicates that the city's Urban Tree Canopy has increased from 32 percent to 48 percent since 1997.

This data was reported in a comprehensive study completed by the Virginia Department of Forestry, University of Vermont, Virginia Tech, and the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission.

Trees provide many benefits to the Roanoke community, including:

  • Removing 304 tons of air pollutants each year, for a total annual value of  $2,270,000
  • Providing an annual energy benefit of $511,000
  • Increasing property values by $913,127
  • Providing an annual storm water benefit of $1,022,236
  • Providing a benefit-cost ratio of street trees of 6.61 to 1
  • Lowering river water temperatures which increases health of rivers

In addition, the National Arbor Day Foundation reports that "it has been conservatively estimated that over $1.5 billion per year is generated in tax revenue for communities in the U.S. due to the value of privately owned trees on residential property." Roanoke's comprehensive plan, Vision 2001-2020, states that "maintaining and increasing the city's tree canopy will have a beneficial impact on air quality, storm water control, noise levels, temperature, and visual appearance." Dan Henry, Roanoke Urban Forester, says "tree canopy plays an important role in the region's popular and growing greenway and outdoor tourism movement."

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO TAKE THE PLEDGE

Air pollution affects the health and quality of life of everyone in the Roanoke region. As summer approaches, so does ozone season, when car exhaust and heat can combine to form heavy amounts of unhealthy ground-level ozone.

CLEAN COMMUTE LOGO

Do your part to improve our air quality by taking the pledge to Commute Clean this May! Pick one or more days to try a clean commute mode, and challenge yourself to carpool, bike, bus, walk, or telecommute to work. Mix and match modes to see what best fits your schedule.

Pledge to use a clean commute option and be eligible for great prizes. For each day you pledge to use a clean mode you will earn one entry into a prize drawing for bike gear, gas cards, bus passes, gift certificates, coffee, movie tickets and more. So take the pledge to commute clean every day in May.

UNDISCOVERED TRAVELS IN ROANOKE

RV picBy Joe Laing, El Monte RV Rentals

The famous Blue Ridge Mountains stretch through eight states, and are home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the US. No matter where you live, you owe it to yourself to visit this area of the country at least once in your lifetime, to drink in the amazing views and unwind from life's challenges. If you can't devote the time for the entire eight-state experience, then at least plan on visiting the Roanoke Valley area in Virginia where adventure meets history meets culture in a trip designed to thrill everyone in your family - from the adrenaline-junkie to the contemplative nature-lover. So grab the keys to your RV and plan out a vacation that everyone will be talking about for years to come. Don't own an RV? Rent one; it's the best way to take advantage of what awaits you in the Roanoke Valley.

Here are some activities to put on your "must-do" list, and be sure to pack some sturdy shoes - you're going to need them!
