PETE'S PICKS

Pete's Picks

A friend recently turned me on to disc golf and I want to share this unique way to spend an afternoon outside. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee. The sport was formalized in the 1970's, and shares with "ball golf" the object of completing each hole in the fewest number of strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest number of throws).

A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is the "hole". The hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets; the most common is called a Pole HoleŽ an elevated metal basket. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the "putt" lands in the basket and the hole is completed.

The Roanoke Region has several disc golf courses for you to choose from. Swing by Dick's Sporting Goods to pick up a golf disc, and then hit the links.

And if you're looking for something to do Saturday night, head over to Back Country Ski & Sports and watch the premiere of 'No Man's Land'. This paddling video was shot entirely in the Roanoke area and documents some of the struggles we're facing with regards to river access.

Have a great one and, Get Outside!

MAY IS BIKE MONTH

BIKE PICTUREMay is Bike Month in the Roanoke and New River Valleys, and local organizations have teamed up to host a series of events celebrating bicycles, bicycle culture, and bicycle people!

This month, you can find an event for every riding style and skill level. Here are just a few of the bike events taking place during the month of May:

The Bike Month mission is to bring attention to both the opportunities and challenges of bicycling as recreation and transportation in the Roanoke Valley by creating events that involve all interest, skill, and age level of cyclists. To support the region's certification under the League of American Bicyclist's Bicycle Friendly Community Designation, events are aligned with the six "E's" of Bicycle Friendly Communities: education, encouragement, enforcement, engineering, evaluation, and equity.

PRIMITIVE TRAILS OPENS ITS VIRTUAL DOORS

PRIMITIVE TRAILS SHIRTHave you heard of TOMS shoes? For every shoe they sell they give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. They've given away several million pairs since they started in 2006.

Primitive Trails, founded in Roanoke, VA, operates on a very similar model.  Instead of shoes, Primitive Trails donates a piece of clothing to a child in need with every sale. When you buy a shirt, they donate a shirt. When you buy a hoodie, they donate a hoodie.

"There are 2.6 million children living at or below the poverty level in rural America" says founder Brain Marshall, "and our goal is to help cloth them one piece of clothing at a time".

Visit www.primitivetrails.org to check out its current line of clothing.
