PETE'S PICKS

Pete's Picks

As you can see the calendar is full of events for everyone. Since it is Easter weekend and most of us will be spending time with our families I thought that this would be a great opportunity to sit everyone down and actually map/plan out your spring and summer adventures. Pull out the calendar, fire up the internet, call your friends and make some commitments to get outside!  Here are few ideas to help get you started:

On Friday, my little girl turns seven. If you're so inclined, she'd love to see some birthday wishes in the comment section of this video we made together.

Have a great one and, Get Outside!

TWO NEW DOUTHAT STATE PARK CAMPGROUNDS ARE NOW OPEN

douthat state park picDouthat State Park, one of Virginia's original six state parks, is now home to the newest state park campgrounds.

Two construction/renovation projects, totaling $2.43 million, converted the Beaver Dam Campground into an equestrian camping area and new 23-site Whispering Pines Campground.

Whispering Pines Campground offers 23 sites, including a universally accessible handicap site, dump stations, water and electric hookups, RV sites up to 50 feet and a bathhouse with showers.

The Beaver Dam Equestrian Campground features 14 campsites and 14 horse stalls, as well as a bathhouse. Renovations to the campground allow for larger trailers.

OUTDOOR LOVER'S VERSION OF NASCAR

bike pic Roanoke Twilight is the outdoor lover's version of NASCAR. Instead of cars racing lap after lap, come out and watch a pack of cyclists navigate narrow streets and tight corners.

Roanoke Twilight is a criterium race, often referred to as a "crit", that takes place in downtown Roanoke the evening of April 21 (action starts at 5pm).

Riders are divided into groups based on their skill level, and each group has a set amount of time (40-75 minutes depending on skill level) to do as many laps as possible. The person who is in the lead at the end of the allotted time wins.

$10,000 in cash prizes is up for grabs. As a bonus, register by 4/7 (noon) and be entered to win a set of Kazane road wheels courtesy of Star Light Bicycles.

Roanoke Twilight is an incredible spectator event that caps off an action filled day. Runners from all over the U.S. take to the streets that morning for the Blue Ridge Marathon, Down by Downtown Music Festival will be cranking out live music all day, and of course there will be beer gardens, food, climbing walls, and more.

CLEAN COMMUTE CHALLENGE

Air pollution affects the health and quality of life of everyone in the Roanoke region. As summer approaches, so does ozone season, when car exhaust and heat can combine to form heavy amounts of unhealthy ground-level ozone.

CLEAN COMMUTE LOGO

Do your part to improve our air quality by taking the pledge to Commute Clean this May! Pick one or more days to try a clean commute mode, and challenge yourself to carpool, bike, bus, walk, or telecommute to work. Mix and match modes to see what best fits your schedule.

Pledge to use a clean commute option and be eligible for great prizes. For each day you pledge to use a clean mode you will earn one entry into a prize drawing for bike gear, gas cards, bus passes, gift certificates, coffee, movie tickets and more. So take the pledge to commute clean every day in May.
