PETE'S PICKS

The gorgeous weather continues this weekend which means you really need to make plans to get outside.
On Friday (7pm), head over to Mill Mountain Coffee (on Starkey Rd.), grab a cup of coffee, and be treated to a "Photographic Thru Hike of the Appalachian Trail". I've always wanted to hike the entire A.T., but can't seem to find the time...this is the next best thing to actually hiking it.
The 33rd annual Clean Valley Day take place on Saturday. Why not spend the morning cleaning up your favorite "outdoor place".
And Sunday afternoon looks to be perfect for a relaxing float down a local river. If you don't have a boat, check out our list of outfitters that will take care of you.
Have a great one, and Get Outside!

NATIONAL PADDLING FILM FESTIVAL - 4/20
For 31 years the National Paddling Film Festival (NPFF) has been hosting a competition to determine the best in paddle sport videos and images. This competition provides the paddling community with a fun and profitable event to support American Whitewater and river conservation. On April 20, the Hollins Outdoor Program will present the second annual National Paddling Film Festival Roadshow. You'll be amazed by these "best-of" videos from NPFF's 31 years of festivals in which amateur and professional videographers capture thrilling footage of whitewater canoeing and kayaking adventures. As an added bonus, the film festival will be hosted by paddlesport star Eli Helbert, aka the Canoe Guru.

SATURDAY IS CLEAN VALLEY DAY
Saturday marks the 33rd Annual Clean Valley Day, to participate just spend some time outside picking up litter. Imagine the difference we can make if each person spent 30 minutes cleaning up their neighborhood.
Last year 76 teams and 1800 volunteers collected 34.9 tons of trash and 468 tires.
This valley-wide clean up promotes respect and dedication to the beautiful community we share. It's a great team-building opportunity for corporations and organizations, and a great way to teach your kids about community service.
So pick your spot - a park, playground, roadside, stream bank, or your very own neighborhood - and get started. Anyone can participate. Heck, if you aren't feeling social you can just pick up trash at your favorite outdoor hang out. The whole point is to make our community a cleaner one.
Clean Valley Council asks is that you pre-register which enables them to track the amount of trash collected and volunteers participating.
- March 31, 2012
- 8:30am: Kick off at Vic Thomas Park (you do not need to attend this to participate)
- 9:00am - Noon: Clean up - your location of choice
