PETE'S PICKS

Pete's Picks

Have you ever been to Buzzards Rock?

Buzzards Rock, located at the top of the 243-acre Read Mountain Preserve, boasts one of the best views of the Roanoke Valley. The preserve includes a 1.9 mile (3.8 round trip) out and back trail from the parking lot to Buzzards Rock summit. The hike is considered moderately difficult, and maybe a stretch for beginner hikers, but the spectacular view is worth the effort. Rumor has it there is either a new trail (or one currently being built) - let us know what you find.

After your hike, head down to Six Eleven Bicycle Company for its open house on Saturday March 24. Aaron Dykstra, Six Eleven's founder/designer, is an award winning bicycle maker crafting some of the best handmade bikes on the planet. Check out his workshop, admire the bikes, and enjoy a frosty one.

MARATHON NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Did you know it takes more than 400 volunteers to pull off America's Toughest Road Marathon?

The Rotary Club of Roanoke Downtown has selected the Blue Ridge Marathon for its annual community service project.  Club members recruit and manage the 400 volunteers needed for the Blue Ridge Marathon.  They are making great progress, but more volunteers are still needed.  Join community members and help ensure participants of America's Toughest Road Marathon have an experience to remember!

ROANOKE PARKLET EXPERIMENT

parklet experimentThe concept of transforming automobile infrastructure into temporary public spaces originated from PARK(ing) Day, an activity first organized by the Rebar Group from San Francisco in 2005. The motivation behind this idea was Rebar's desire to "activate the metered parking space as a site for creative experimentation, political, and cultural expression, and unscripted social interaction" (The PARK(ing) Day Manual).

Communities across the world have joined this movement by organizing and supporting temporary public installations following PARK(ing) Day's core principles. Their common objective is to convert small areas of automobile infrastructure into a prototype for open-source urban design that is accessible to everyone. Cities, like New York and San Francisco, are using the success of this event to evaluate the potential of reprogramming parking areas into spaces for social exchange and artistic expression that could, eventually, be implemented as permanent Parklets.

An oversupply of surface parking can be unsightly and uninviting to residents, visitors and workers of any urban setting; particularly where vast grey infrastructure is accompanied by a lack of green public space. Parklets provide a temporary solution by creating park-like areas with public amenities that might be, otherwise, unavailable. Such amenities can include shading, seating, bike racks, planters, public art, and more.

The Roanoke Parklet Experiment takes place April 13-14. Continue reading to learn more>>>

LOCAL BIKE BUILDER GAINS INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

611 pICFor the third year in a row, a Roanoke bicycle maker has been recognized for crafting some of the best handmade bikes on the planet.

Aaron Dykstra, owner of Six-Eleven Bicycle Co. (www.sixelevenbicycleco.com), last week won the Best Cyclocross Bicycle award at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show. This follows his Rookie of the Year award in 2010 and Best Track Bicycle nod last year.

Dykstra's company was inspired by and named after the 611 J-Class steam engine, built in Roanoke in 1950. At this year's show in Sacramento, enthusiasts took notice of Dykstra's nod to heritage and his town's railroading history.

"American heritage is becoming popular overseas, and having a brand that proudly displays that heritage is getting noticed in the international market," he said. Dykstra took two deposits for custom bicycles from Tokyo bike shop owners while at the show in Sacramento.
