WEEKEND UPDATE

PETE'S PICKS

Pete's PicksHere's an idea if you're looking for a fun night out on the town! Head downtown Friday night for Art by Night.

Meet your friends for a drink, cruise through the galleries (click here for a map/brochure), then have dinner at one of the many great restaurants in the area. Some of my favorites include Thai Continental, Lucky, Quarter, and First & Sixth.

On Saturday you can burn some of the calories you put on the night before when you attend the Fleet Feet Sports Fun Run/Walk. Fleet Feet is celebrating nine years of providing Roanoke with the finest running equipment and service.

HELP BRING A CLIMBING GYM TO THE ROANOKE REGION

2012 marathon logoAre you a climber, or just someone looking for a new way to exercise? Do you want to see a climbing/bouldering gym open in Roanoke Region?

A potential operator is conducting a feasibility study for a climbing gym in Roanoke.

But before they commit to building the gym, they want to know if people will use it.

200 responses are needed to demonstrate demand - share this with your friends, co-workers, on Facebook, etc.

Please take a moment to complete the survey>>>

TIME-LAPSED VIDEO OF GREENWAY BRIDGE INSTALLATION

Another greenway milestone captured by local photographer Kemper Fant!

This time-lapsed video shows a greenway bridge being installed at 17th Street (near Memorial Bridge and Black Dog Salvage).

Once fully installed, this new section will add 1.2 miles to the western end of the Roanoke River Greenway. If the weather continues to cooperate, it's anticipated that this section will open late April/early May.

If you want the greenway to continue beyond this new section, then please consider a donation to the Bridge The Gap campaign. There is a four-mile gap between the cities of Roanoke and Salem that is currently unfunded. Bridge the Gap is a public/private initiative to raise the monies needed to build the missing four miles.  Once complete the Roanoke River Greenway will span 18 miles connecting Green Hill Park in Salem with the Tinker Creek Greenway in Vinton.

WIN A PAIR OF FOUR-DAY PASSES TO FLOYDFEST 11 - LOVERS ROCK

Floyd Fest 11There is a reason FloydFest was voted "Best Outdoor Festival" by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine - it's simply an incredible experience you don't want to miss.  It's much more than just a music festival - four days of camping (if you want to), more than 100 performers on 10 music stages, beer and wine gardens, performance art, global village, kids' universe, craft workshops, trapeze school, disc golf, mountain bike trail, and lots more.

The music acts you'll see are too numerous to list, but here are a few headliners you won't want to miss:  Alison Krauss, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Jackson Browne, SOJA, Brandi Carlile, Leftover Salmon, Matisyahu, Bruce Hornsby, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Galactic, ALO, Punch Brothers, Gary Clark, Toubah Krewe, Locos Por Juana, and many, many more.

FloydFest sold out last year and the way ticket sales are going this year it looks like it will sell out fairly soon. So, if you don't win our contest and really want to go, we highly recommend not waiting to purchase your tickets.
