WEEKEND UPDATE

PETE'S PICKS

Pete's Picks

For those of you who don't know, I am the chair of the Blue Ridge Marathon, and I couldn't be more proud of how far the event has come in just two years. On April 21 runners (and families) from 40+ states, and a few international countries, will descend upon Roanoke for the third running of America's Toughest Road Marathon.

We've worked hard to make this much more than just a running event and I'd like to personally invite you to participate in one or more of the following events planned to provide a weekend full of activities.
  • Down by Downtown Music Festival - enjoy live music on both Friday and Saturday, along with a beer garden, climbing wall, bouncy room, and more.
  • Saturday night the Roanoke Twilight Criterium takes to the streets and provides a cycling spectacular rarely seen around here.  Think NASCAR but on bicycles.
  • The best way to be part of this event? Volunteer. It takes more than 400 volunteers to ensure our guests walk away with an incredible experience. So grab a group of friends, get your office workers to join you, and volunteer. Click here to learn how.

DO YOU KNOW A BIKE HERO?

bike hero awardNominations are now being accepted for the 4th annual Bike Hero and Extraordinary Bicycle Professional Awards.

Recognizing those who are working hard on bicycling issues in the community is an important part of making the Roanoke a bicycling friendly community.

These awards recognize individuals in the greater Roanoke Valley area who are improving the opportunities for bicycling as a form of transportation, either through their individual effort and example as a cycling enthusiast, or through their professional work.

DO YOU KNOW AN ENVIRONMENTAL HERO?

Do you know an everyday hero who is making great strides today to ensure a greener tomorrow?

Nominations are being accepted through March 11th for the 2012 Virginia Cox Conserves Heroes Program in partnership with The Trust for Public Land. Nominate local environmental heroes in the Roanoke Valley who create, preserve, or enhance outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy - parks, greenways, gardens, waterways, plazas, streets, and other public areas.

The winning hero gets a $10,000 donation toward the environmental nonprofit of his or her choice. The two remaining finalists each receive $2,500 contributions to their nonprofits of choice.
