JOB CREATION REMAINS BRISK

A recent analysis by Headlight LLC, specialists in data information systems for workforce and economic development, shows that Roanoke was in the top 25 percent of small US metros in terms of job growth during the summer months of 2011.  From June to September 2011, Roanoke gained over 1,100 jobs, a one percent increase in the number of jobs available.  The region's annualized growth rate over this period was 4.2 percent.

Roanoke's rate of growth is truly remarkable considering that 43 percent of US metros were in recession this summer, many experiencing continued job losses throughout the summer months including Asheville, NC (lost 0.2 percent), Knoxville, TN (lost 1.3 percent), and Chattanooga (lost 0.9 percent).

Roanoke's September unemployment rate ranks 74th out of 372 metros in the nation, putting it in the top 20 percent of all metros nationally.

ROANOKE REGIONAL INTERMODAL FACILITY WILL BRING OPPORTUNITY

A recent decision by the Virginia Supreme Court paves the way for a regional intermodal facility that will provide better service to the region's intermodal shippers and attract new businesses that can take advantage of faster, easier, and economical shipping.

The Roanoke Regional Partnership supported Norfolk Southern's plans for the facility in Elliston, said John Williamson, president.  "We know this is good news for the region. The intermodal facility has the potential to save a business money and time getting product to market."

"Because the Roanoke regional facility is one of several now under development by Norfolk Southern, you know it's a critical piece of infrastructure for a region's competitiveness" said Beth Doughty, executive director.

The Roanoke Regional Partnership has been studying the benefits of an intermodal facility.  The findings are summarized in this PowerPoint presentation.
