NEW CAMPAIGN: SAVE-A TON

Higher electric bills. Sticker shock at the gas pump. Fuel surcharges. Energy can cost a ton.

Fortunately, it's easy to save money and give your strapped budget a boost. You can save hundreds of dollars in energy costs every year by doing just a little.

Citizens and governments in the Roanoke and New River Valleys recently launched Save a Ton - a new campaign to help people save money on energy use.

The multi-media campaign encourages people to visit www.saveaton.org, learn about energy savings and share their ideas and results on social media.

"With bigger electric bills, stubborn gas prices and higher home heating costs - and with winter around the corner - we're here to help residents in our region and beyond save hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year in energy costs by doing just a little," said Nell Boyle, chair of RC CLEAR, a Roanoke County citizen committee, and director of the local chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council.

There are dozens of ways to save in energy costs. For example...continue reading>>>

The $200,000 agreement calls for a dock, expanded boat launch, more parking and other perks.

The improvements could provide infrastructure to encourage fishermen and bass fishing tournaments popular in the area, said Michael Burnette, director of commerce and leisure services in Franklin County.

Plans call for a dock, an expanded boat launch, parking for 80 boat trailers, a stage and picnic area, bathroom facilities, and electricity and water to the area, according to the agreement.
