PETE'S PICKS

After an incredible weekend of fun at the Roanoke Outdoor Circus my family and I were in need of some good old quality downtime. So we decided to check out a hike we've never done before - Bottom Creek Gorge.
Bottom Creek Gorge is protected by The Nature Conservancy and quite possibly one of the most beautiful hikes we've ever done. Bottom Creek Gorge is home to the second highest waterfall in Virginia, although we never made it there (next time).
We had the trail to ourselves and the fall foliage was amazing. This is one hike you must check out! Get Outside!

ROANOKE MOUNTAIN CAMPGROUND - KEEP IT OR LOSE IT?
The National Park Service (NPS) recently released a draft of the Blue Ridge Parkway General Management Plan. This is different than the Roanoke Trail Plan which you may have read about back in September. This is an overall plan for the entire Parkway and encompasses everything from overlooks and recreation areas to lodges and restaurants.
Of concern to the Roanoke area is the Roanoke Mountain Campground. Parkway officials identified the campground as being underused, and although it isn't heavily used, having a more urban campground is a great asset to the Roanoke Region.
As outdoor recreation participation continues to increase, the need for gateway resources like Roanoke Mountain Campground, are needed more than ever. Closing Roanoke Mountain Campground is a step backward, and we as a community need to be doing everything in our power to make the outdoors more accessible.
The general management plan outlines three alternative plans for Roanoke Mountain Campground which you can view here. To simplify it, here are the three alternatives:
- Alternative A - Campground remains open and in pretty much the same condition, although comfort stations would be upgraded to include showers.
- Alternative B - Campground closes and becomes a day-use recreation area (preferred by NPS).
- Alternative C - Campground remains open and allows for future upgrades to the campground (pending funding) that include accommodations for RVs (water & electric hookups) and larger tent platforms.
Alternative B is preferred by the National Park Service and will be adopted unless they hear from citizens like you.

NEW PORT-A-JOHN AT CARVINS COVE
If you've spent any time at Carvins Cove you know that there is one thing missing...a location for you to relieve yourself in an environmentally responsible manner.
Thanks to the Western Virginia Water Authority our prayers for porcelain (well plastic) have been answered.
The new port-a-toilet is located at the Bennett Springs parking lot. Let's do our part to keep it clean and in good condition.

JOYRIDE: PEDALING TOWARD A HEALTHIER PLANET
Mia Birk an environmental advocate, bicyclist, author, and alternative transportation activist, will share the keys to transforming communities and empowering people, one pedal stroke at a time Friday night, October 28, at the CityWorks (X)po 2011.
Her journey began in the heart of car-culture USA with a car-addicted youth in Dallas, Texas. Breaking away from home and a typical sedentary American lifestyle, Mia settled in Portland, Oregon, where she and a cast of larger-than-life characters led Portland's transformation into the nation's most bicycle-friendly city. Mia is here to talk about her transformational work, and sees bicycling as a win-win strategy for maintaining health, safety, budget, and community connection.
CityWorks (X)po 2011 is a small cities conference celebrating the people and projects that have exponential impact. National leaders from the fields of social entrepreneurship & capital, arts & design, knowledge & new media, leadership & good government, food & drink and outdoors & recreation will gather from all over the country in historic Roanoke, Virginia.

VOTES ARE IN, OUTDOOR CIRCUS A SUCCESS
"Showing off Roanoke's incredible natural assets and connecting people with the outdoors is one of our primary goals," says Paul Chapman, Roanoke Parks & Recreation. "If people walk away wanting to try a new outdoor sport, or even if they're just motivated to get outside more, then we've done our job". Close to 5000 people attended the event and everywhere you turned you were treated to exhibits, demos, and clinics that promoted a variety of outdoor experiences from climbing and biking to sustainable living and fly tying. Highlights of the weekend included the Gibbon Slacklines pro team demo, Sustainable Living Roadshow, Jeff Lenosky bike trials show, MountainFilm Festival, and the Gear Junkie Treasure Hunt, but these were merely the tip of the iceberg. "At one point I was sitting on the grass, listening to a local band with Ghana roots, sipping a beer" says Stratton Delaney, "when I looked around and saw kids on the climbing wall, people learning to cast a fly rod, tons of people riding bikes, about 300 people watching the bike trials show, and another 100 watching the slackline pros. It was pretty cool to see this happening here in Roanoke." - If you attended Roanoke's first annual outdoor sports festival please take a moment to provide some feedback. Your comments will help ensure 2012 is even better.
