PETE'S PICKS

I'm getting up on my soapbox for the next seven days. Why seven? Because in seven days one of the coolest events to happen in Roanoke takes place - the Roanoke Outdoor Circus.
If you're reading this, then it means you place a high value on nature, recreation, and living a healthy, active lifestyle. Many outdoor-focused organizations have put a lot of time and energy into making this a unique event and for that we say "thank you".
Your presence at the Roanoke Outdoor Circus (aka the ROC) sends a clear message to our community, businesses, governments, and elected officials that the outdoors plays an important role in "who" Roanoke is.
Please take a moment to review www.theoutdoorcircus.com, check out the schedule of events, and find some time to come show your support. Get Outside!

NEW BELGIUM BREWERY & MOUNTAINFILM at OUTDOOR CIRCUS
The Roanoke Outdoor Circus (aka the ROC), presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, is next weekend (October 21-23). Are you ready? Each week we've been profiling a few of the very cool, and unique, things you'll find at the R
OC. This isn't your typical festival - and you're not going to see the things you normally see at Roanoke festivals, or any festival for that matter.
New Belgium Brewery: We're excited to partner with New Belgium to bring you some of the finest craft beers in the world. Reps will be on hand to tell you all about their beers. They'll also be providing some interactive demo areas as well. Another cool thing, you'll get a clear, plastic commemorative pint glass with your first purchase that you can reuse throughout the festival...just doing our part to reduce waste.
MountainFILM Festival: Friday night (around 9pm) grab a beer, a chair, and get ready to watch some incredible outdoor adventure films. We have 12 films lined up that will leave you inspired...and ready for action.
The Roanoke Outdoor Circus (aka the ROC): The region's newest annual event combines what outdoor enthusiasts love - activities, camping, music, gear, races, and demonstrations -- in a unique outdoor weekend festival for the entire family. Special features include the Gibbon Slackline team, $40,000 Gear Junkie Treasure Hunt, Jeff Lenosky Bike Trials, MountainFilm festival, Sustainable Living Roadshow, and the New Belgium Brewery beer garden. Check out www.theoutdoorcircus.com for all the details.

BIKE AWARDED TO LIZET HERNANDEZ
As part of the International Walk and Bike to School Day on October 5, 2011, Hurt Park Elementary School was awarded a Safe Routes to School grant to encourage students to walk and ride bikes to school to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. As part of the day's activities, students learned how to properly fit bike helmets and learned the basics of safely navigating the community on a bike. East Coasters Bicycle Shop in Roanoke generously donated a new bicycle that was awarded to one lucky student at the end of the day. Students who took part in the bicycle safety classes were entered into a drawing to win the bike. Second grade student, Lizet Hernandez, won the bicycle and was very excited! Special thanks to Wes Best, co-owner of East Coasters Bicycle Shop for making the donation possible. We join the City of Roanoke in graciously thanking Wes and East Coasters for their generosity and for caring about their community! Please visit East Coasters web page at www.eastcoasters.com. Note: coincidentally, East Coasters was recently awarded the Small Business of the Year Award (retail) by the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce.
