PETE'S PICKS

Pete Picture

Fall is in the air and that means it's time to go camping.

If you've never been to the Roanoke Mountain Campground, now is the time to check it out. My family has camped there a few times and there is usually only a few other campsites occupied - what a hidden gem.

From the campground you can easily access some of the best hiking trails in Roanoke including Chestnut Ridge, Mill Mountain, and Explore Park trails.

Also, the Gear Junkie Treasure Hunt is looking for a few more volunteers for 10/23 (~8am-~4pm). Email me if you want to help out. We'll make it worth while...wink wink.

HIKE SAFETY TIPS FROM THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL CONSERVANCY

We're fortunate to have over 500 miles of the Appalachian Trail passing through Virginia, including some of the most scenic, well-known sections along the 2,181 mile corridor - - Dragon's Tooth and McAfee Knob.  We've seen an increase in the number of people who are enjoying these picturesque locations on the trail each year.  Unfortunately, an increase in visitor use has also lead to an increase in rescue calls to Roanoke County Fire & Rescue. Fortunately most calls are for the lost and not injured. Don't become a statistic.

$40,000 GEAR GIVEAWAY AT OUTDOOR CIRCUS
The Roanoke Outdoor Circus (aka the ROC), presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, is a month away (October 21-23). This event has so many unique attributes that it wouldn't do them justice to lump them into one story.  Each week we'll profile one or two "attractions" you'll discover at the ROC.gear junkie logo

Gear, gear, and more gear!  That's what you'll find at the $40,000 Gear Junkie Treasure Hunt.

On Sunday (10/23) you'll have your chance to win some pretty sweet swag. Tents, backpacks, hammocks, sunglasses, watches, shoes, GPS units, sleeping bags, car racks, solar charging stations, clothing, and more are all up for grabs.

You have three hours to find as many checkpoints hidden throughout downtown and surrounding areas as you can. The more checkpoints, the more points you earn. At the end of the day you turn your points in for gear!

Open to everyone, but limited to 300 participants (and there are only a few spots left). All you need to be able to do is read a map!  Register now!

HUNTING SEASON HAS STARTED - WEAR ORANGE

It's hunting season here in Virginia and that means it's time to break out the orange vests (or brightly color clothing) when you head out for your next hike, trail run, bike ride, or camping adventure. And don't forget to put a vest on your dog too.
