PETE'S PICKS

As the leaves begin turning colors, it's a good time to think about the many ways you can soak in the vibrant fall foliage we're bound to have this year.
Here's an idea for you: Take a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway to mile post 60.8. Here you'll find the Otter Creek Restaurant (different than Peaks of Otter). You'll also find some of the best pancakes east of the Mississippi. On your way home stop at Peaks of Otter and hike the 3.5-mile Harkening Hill loop trail.
And, if you're in a giving mood and feel like "giving back" then consider volunteering a few hours at the Roanoke Outdoor Circus. You're guaranteed a good time! Get Outside!

JEFF LENOSKY AT THE OUTDOOR CIRCUS
The Roanoke Outdoor Circus (aka the ROC), presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, is a month away (October 21-23). This event has so many unique attributes that it wouldn't do them justice to lump them into one story. Each week we'll profile one or two "attractions" you'll discover at the ROC.
If you like watching people do crazy things that could seriously injure them, then look no further than Jeff Lenosky!
A legend of mountain bike free riding and trials riding, Jeff Lenosky is a veteran Giant Bicycles rider who travels the country competing and performing demos. A native of New Jersey, he is a pioneer of MTB street and urban riding and he holds the world record for the highest bunny hop on a mountain bike (45.5 inches). Today Lenosky spends most of his time showing off his skills at group events and competing in trials, dual stunt and other events. He performs at more than 150 shows around the country. Watch in amazement as Jeff balances, hops, and rides his bike along the smallest of rails and platforms.

ANNUAL FALL WATERWAY CLEANUP
The Roanoke Region offers the best of both worlds: mountains and water. Put the two together and welcome to paradise. With the largest freshwater lake in Virginia, as well as dozens of creeks and challenging rivers, there is no limit on the fun you can have on the water.
But every now and then it's time make sure you're doing your part to ensure we keep our outdoors clean and pristine.
Join volunteers from all over the Roanoke Valley on Saturday, October 1, to remove trash from our streams, creeks and rivers and their vicinities. Clean your favorite spot along a stream, tributary or river (or get to know a new one).
Last year nearly 780 volunteers collected 31 tons of trash and 355 tires!
- Come alone, or better yet, get your civic group or business involved
- Clean your favorite waterway on your own, or join the large gathering at Wasena Park
- The organized event runs from 8:30 to 11:30am (no time frame if you are doing your own waterway)
- Picnic celebration afterward at Wasena Park (11:30am - 2:00pm)
- Supplies provided by Clean Valley Council
- Call 540.345.5523 with any questions
Let's work together to keep our waterways clean, safe, and beautiful.
