PETE'S PICKS

Pete Picture

This weekend my family and I plan to celebrate National Public Lands Day by doing some trail work at Carvins Cove Natural Reserve (see event description farther down). In the afternoon we are going to get medieval at the Medieval Faire & Highland Games at Green Hill Park, and in the evening we are going to build a backyard campfire and roast some marshmallows!

I'd love to hear some fresh new ideas on how you spend your time outdoors. Please post some ideas in the comment section of our blog.

$40,000 OUTDOOR GEAR GIVEAWAY RETURNS TO ROANOKE

ARE YOU A GEAR JUNKIE?

treasure hunt logo

Here's your chance to compete for $40,000 worth of the coolest, newest outdoor equipment when nationally syndicated columnist, Stephen Regenold (aka The Gear Junkie), makes a return trip to Roanoke for the 2nd annual Gear Junkie Treasure Hunt on October 23rd.

Approximately $40K worth of outdoor gear will be hidden throughout downtown Roanoke (and surrounding areas) to add a distinctive urban twist to the hunt.

Open to everyone, but limited to 300 participants. All you need to be able to do is read a map!

How it works:

  1. Register ($35) - you're guaranteed to walk away with gear...so it's worth it.
  2. Show up to the starting area (Rivers Edge Sports Complex - part of the Roanoke Outdoor Circus).
  3. Minutes before your scheduled start time you'll be given a map. Approximately 15 "check points" will be plotted on this map.
  4. Navigate to as many check points as you can during your allotted three hours.
  5. The more check points you find, the more points you earn.
  6. Participants are arranged in order of highest to lowest earned points.
  7. Participants enter the "gear tent" every 15 seconds where you select a piece of gear before exiting the other side.

URBAN FARM PROPOSED FOR COUNTRYSIDE

The City of Roanoke invites residents to a public meeting to review and comment on a proposal from Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op to establish an urban agriculture operation on two properties located between Portland Avenue, Ranch Road, and Lewiston Street. The Countryside Master Plan designated the two city-owned properties (12.2 acres) for urban agriculture uses.

Twelve acres newly dedicated to urban agriculture is not only an important statement for supporting local foods, it is the largest example of its kind. We can find no precedent for an urban farm of this size, especially in new development. Other American urban farms are smaller and/or on land that had previously been dedicated to agriculture.

This is giant step forward for local foods, a local economy, and urban agriculture. The farm will strengthen the local food system and build community involvement not only in the Countryside neighborhood, but throughout the city as well. Plans are to produce local food and to use the farm as an educational resource where individuals can learn through experiencing urban agriculture.

  • Where:  William Fleming High School Cafeteria
  • When:    Thursday, September 22, 2011, 6:30pm

NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY - 9/24

national public lands day logoNational Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. Volunteers build trails and bridges, remove trash and invasive plants, plant trees and restore our water resources.

It proved to be a huge success and NPLD became a yearly tradition, typically held on the last Saturday in September.  Since the first NPLD, the event has grown by leaps and bounds. Last year, 170,000 volunteers worked at over 2,080 sites in every state,
