PETE'S PICKS

Pete Picture

Looks like a dry and gorgeous weekend ahead of us...what are your plans?

If you're looking to explore a new area then look no farther than Philpott Reservoir.

Philpott Reservoir is a 2,880-acre lake located in southern Franklin County.  You won't find any residential development along the shoreline, but you will find numerous facilities scattered throughout the reservoir such as boat landings, campgrounds, picnic areas, beaches, and hiking trails.

GREENWAY'S POPULARITY CREATES SOME PERILS

Roanoke Times Metro columnist Dan Casey recently wrote a story that discusses a few of the dangers associated with increased greenway use. The more people enjoying the greenway, the more likely for accidents to occur:

"It happened early in the morning, just about dawn on a weekday, as Mac McCorkle was taking a before-work bicycle spin on the Roanoke River Greenway.

The Roanoke orthodontist was riding, with lights, from Smith Park to Wasena Park on the low-water bridge that connects them. Coming in the opposite direction was another cyclist who wore earbuds and - despite the morning darkness - sunglasses.

Crash! The other guy went down. Fortunately, neither was seriously injured.

That was one of a handful of recent greenway bicycle crashes and near misses that have prompted a relatively new painted centerline on a section of the paved path near Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. More may be coming in other greenway hot spots..."

Reading Dan's column reminds us of a Greenway Etiquette video put out a few years ago.  Although a few years old, the message is still the same - stay to the right, don't wear headphones, be courteous, don't speed, keep your dog's leash close to you, and don't congregate/socialize in the middle of the greenway.

FILMS YOU'LL SEE AT RADICAL REELS FILM FESTIVAL

Faster, steeper, higher, deeper! The most outrageous mountain sport films from the 35th annual Banff Mountain Film Festival will thrill and inspire you with big-screen adventures when RADICAL REELS comes to Roanoke on September 14 at the Jefferson Center. RR LOGO

Bike tough trails, paddle wild waters, and ski steep slopes. The Radical Reels Tour runs every spring & winter and spans North America bringing a variety of mountain sport films to a wide range of viewers from hard-core outdoor adventurers to weekend warriors. So hang on to your seats as we present the world's best action films on skiing, boarding, climbing, biking, kayaking and more - all brought to life on the big screen.

To wet your palette, we've provided some summaries of the films you'll be seeing.

In the three-minute documentary spoof, Cross Country Snowboarding, the world's most dedicated Nordic snowboarders battle the winter elements as they fight prejudice from skiers and regular snowboarders alike.

From the crew that brought us The Collective, Roam, and Seasons, Follow Me examines why we love to ride. Whether it's back yard sessions, ripping local trails, bike parks, road trips, or heli drops, it's all about sharing the ride.

The latest standard setting flick from the legendary crew at Teton Gravity Research, Light the Wick is about sparking the flame and watching the world's most talented and well-rounded skiers and riders blast off.

Renan Ozturk had been a traveling vagabond following his passion for rock climbing - sleeping outside in wild places, hitching rides, and draining his bank account. These days he is a little more domesticated, but still doing what he loves in Living the Dream.

OSeven is a charming multi-sport nod to Sigmund Freud's theory that "happiness is a child's dream fulfilled in maturity".

Described as "an exploration of the abstract and the extreme" by its filmmakers, Second Nature follows three vintage suit clad skateboarders as they test the limits of the human body on the roads of California's High Sierras.

The Storming is a progressive snowboarding feast for the senses, featuring Sammy Luebke, Kazu Kukobu, Torstein Horgmo, and a cast of chicks who rip.

A previously unexplored wonderland of boulders and crags, nestled at an elevation of 4200 meters under the Tuzgle volcano in Argentina, is discovered by Swiss climber Nina Caprez and her climbing companions in Tuzgle.

Renowned kayaker Steve Fisher brings together a brotherhood of big-water pros to experience the ride of their lives on Africa's Zambezi River in The Ultimate Ride: Steve Fisher.
