PETE'S PICKS

Have you checked the weekend weather forecast yet? It's going to cool down to a chilly 89°...
So, my recommendation is to be on, or in, the water this weekend.
- Rent a canoe/kayak/tube and float down the James River, New River, or Craig Creek. We floated Craig Creek last Sunday and didn't see a single other person on the water.
- Rent a pontoon boat (or ski boat) and spend some quality time on Smith Mountain or Claytor Lakes. Grab some friends and find that "hidden cove" to anchor your boat in.
- Go for a hike that has a "water" reward - Bottoms Creek, Roaring Run, Apple Orchard Falls, Cascades, Crab Tree Falls, Falls Ridge Preserve, and Blue Suck Falls are all beautiful and have some kind of water feature. Click here for details on these hikes.
Have fun and stay hydrated!

WORLD'S LARGEST PANORAMIC PHOTO - ADD YOURS
Merrell, the shoe and clothing company, just launched its Add Your Own Scenery promotion to make "the world's largest panoramic photo". What's even cooler is the fact that for every photo uploaded Merrell will donate $1 to organizations that help support and protect public lands.
So post some Roanoke photos and then be sure to mark them as your favorite. The photo with the most votes will win a $5,000 adventure trip.

DISCOVER THE THRILL OF SAILING
The Virginia Inland Sailing Association (VISA) is hosting an open house this weekend; this is your chance to learn more about the sport of sailing and the opportunities that await you at Smith Mountain Lake.
Spend some time learning about the club from tour guides, and be sure to grab some information about the junior and college sailing programs, as well as the club racing programs.
Basic sailboat classes will be conducted on the club's beach and there will be additional activities including sail excursions on members' boats, a regatta Saturday afternoon, and a fireboat demonstration by the Scruggs Volunteer Fire Department Sunday afternoon.

WHAT'S SUP - STAND UP PADDLEBOARD CLINICS
The fast-growing sport of stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is a fun, easy way to go play on the water. With a minimum of equipment, you can paddle anything from ocean surf to lakes and rivers-no waves required.
SUP changes your perspective; anglers have a better view of fish and can access shallow waters with ease, while white-water enthusiasts now have an added challenge on their every-day runs. Take your board to the ocean and in minutes you'll be surfing like a champ.
Luke Hopkins, owner/builder of Stride Stand Up Paddleboards, is offering several two-hour beginner stand up paddlboard and kayak adventure courses for only $99!
- Course is offered every other Saturday June through October
- Two locations: Smith Mountain Lake and Claytor Lake
- More details
This course is the first step to getting out and standing up on the hundreds of miles of rivers and lakes located throughout the Roanoke, VA region.
Click here for more details and to schedule your lesson. Also the cost of your course is applied toward the purchase of any board and paddle package.

RUN WITH GRACE
OK all you runners out there, here's a race worth running!
Run With Grace is a 5K/1 mile fun run/walk that benefits the Grace Lovegrove Scholarship. Since 2005, a scholarship has been awarded annually to a Patrick Henry High School graduate each year, and is also used to support the school's cross country and track teams.
So who is Grace Lovegrove?

Grace led the Patrick Henry cross country and distance teams her last two years in high school and was co-captain of the cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams her senior year (2003-04). During her time at Patrick Henry she earned 12 varsity letters and was an honor student. Running was her passion and she followed her passion to Christopher Newport University where she earned second team conference honors in cross country (and was an honor student) during her first year.
While out on a practice run with a teammate Grace collapsed from a sudden cardiac arrest caused by an unexplainable electrical problem within her body. She was an organ donor and four Virginians received her organs. Grace was 18 years old.
Grace embodies the spirit of all runners...so come celebrate Grace and celebrate the sport of running as you Run With Grace.
Details:
- Date: June 11
- Time: 8:30am
- What: 5K and 1 mile fun run/walk
