DID YOU KNOW MAY IS BIKE MONTH?
May is Bike Month in the Roanoke Valley, and local organizations have teamed up to host a series of events celebrating bicycles, bicycle culture, and bicycle people. A complete list of the growing roster of events can be found at bikeroanoke.com.
The Bike Month mission is to bring attention to both the opportunities and challenges of bicycling as recreation and transportation in the Roanoke Region by creating events that involve all interest, skill, and age levels of cyclists. To support the region's certification under the League of American Bicyclist's Bicycle Friendly Community Designation (we're currently a Bronze Community), events are aligned with the six E's of Bicycle Friendly Communities: Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, Engineering, Evaluation, and Equity.
Event Oveviews:
- Blue Ridge Bicycle Club's Tuesday Night Ride - every Tuesday
- Five-Point Bike Polo Match - every Monday

ADD SOME MORE TRAILS?
Of course we need to add some more trails! The 600+ miles we already have aren't nearly enough. Join other trail advocates as they extend a popular trail at Carvins Cove.
The Four Gorge Extension trail at Carvins Cove will be around one mile and will continue the trail across the fire road and come out close to the top of the Tuck-a-Way trail. Your help is needed to finish the trail this summer. Regularly scheduled work days, that you can put on your calendar, have been implemented. Come for one, come for all...but above all, come out the first Saturday and/or the third Sunday of each month beginning this Sunday (May 22). Work days will start at 9am at the Bennett Springs parking lot and volunteers will carpool to the work site. If you want to meet the crew at the work site, just walk into the woods across from the end of the Four Gorge trail until you find the new trail. Work will continue until 1pm. Work days for June are Saturday June 4th and Sunday June 19th. June 4th is National Trail Day and will be a big event with food and other fun stuff. If you plan on making any of these work days please email bbatteiger@comcast.net. A headcount is always appreciated to help plan for transportation, tools, and snacks.
