WEEKEND UPDATE
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
PETE'S PICKS

Greenways and Music; two of my favorite things.  Seems like they go together like peanut butter and chocolate.

May 13 & 14 is shaping up to be a great weekend with both music and greenway activities, and my recommendation is to make plans and buy your tickets now.

GREENWAYS - May 14 (10am-11pm) is the 2nd annual River Greenway Festival which celebrates the river, its multi-use walking and biking trails, and its many riverfront parks. The festival features an outdoor play learn zone (10am-1pm), Gallop 4 the Greenways (4-6pm), exhibitors (11am-6pm), and much more. Everything takes place along the Roanoke River Greenway near Rivers Edge Park/Wiley Drive.

MUSIC - May 13-14 is Down By The River - a music festival in conjunction with the River Greenway Festival. Participate in the Gallop 4 the Greenways and you get in free. Music acts include Jay Farrar, Court Yard Hounds (2/3 of the Dixie Chicks), Chris Thile, Black Lillies, Neko Case, and more. Beer and food will be available onsite.

So here is how it should play out for you:

  • Register for Gallop 4 The Greenways - There is something for everyone, and it is for a great cause. Choose between the kid run, one-mile walk, or 5K race. Remember that if you participate in the Gallop you get in to Down by The River free, and you can get a second person in for only $15.
  • Show up to the River Greenway Festival early. Visit the exhibors, listen to music, and relax.
  • Participate in the Gallop (4-6pm), and when you are finished walk right into Down By The River and enjoy some great music.

BUILD A PUMP TRACK

Pump track mania is sweeping the globe and Roanoke is about to get in on the action!

A pump track is a continuous dirt loop of rollers and insloped turns, reminiscent of a BMX track but smaller in scale. With a little practice, this track can be ridden by cyclists of all ages and skill levels without pedaling - you simply "pump" your bike.

Following guidelines set out by the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) and pump track guru Lee McCormack, Roanoke Parks and Recreation will construct a public pump track at Norwich Park.

Construction begins this Sunday (May 1) and will be built primarily by volunteers. So come be part of constructing Roanoke's first public pump track.

Details:

  • Sunday (May 1)
  • 10am-3pm
  • Norwich Park
  • Bring water, food, and any tools (shovels, wheelbarrows, etc)

HOW TO CHOOSE A FAMILY TENT

With all the tent choices available to the outdoor enthusiast today it's a bit overwhelming to get started when shopping for a new tent. Narrowing down what the tent will be used for is the first step. After that you'll have three main categories of tent to choose from - "El Cheapo," The Starter Home," or "The Suite." So how do you choose a family tent that will meet your specific needs? Read on my fellow campers!
