WEEKEND UPDATE
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
PETE'S PICKS

Mother Nature can't seem to make up her mind with regards to this weekend's weather. One day it looks like 60 and sunny, but the next it's 50 and rainy, so I'm going to play it safe and give a few rainy day recommendations:

  • Check out Dinosaurs Alive at the Science Museum of Western Virginia's MegaDome.
  • Collaborate with your friends to participate in the 32nd Annual Clean Valley Day on April 9.
  • Even if it's raining outside, it's dry inside a cave - and it's probably not too late to get in on the Introduction to Caving trip taking place Saturday.
  • If you're in the market for a new mountain bike then you don't want to miss the free bike demo taking place Sunday...it's always fun to just "test drive" one.

Whatever you end up doing...have fun and be safe!

Bike Stuff, Bike Stuff, and More Bike Stuff

When it rains, it pours...and it seems mountain biking is no exception to the rule.Bike Parts picture

There are three significant mountain bike events taking place over the course of the next week that any mountain biker should take note of:

Dragon's Tale:  The Tale of the Dragon is a long one versed with history. It began with Kyle Inman's "Dragon's Back" in the late 1990's. The unique backcountry singletrack event brought some amazing racing to trails not often used in mountain bike events. On April 3 choose between a 40-mile epic ride or a 20-mile scenic jaunt, either one will leave you with a story to tell.

Bike Demo:  Test out the latest Pivot, Niner, and Cannondale road and mountain bikes at Just The Right Gear's Carvins Cove Bike Demo.  Everything is free...just bring your shoes and helmet. April 3 (10:30am-4pm).  Demo takes place at the Carvins Cove "gate" entrance which is located at the very end of Carvins Cove Road.

Wednesday Night Disco Race Series:  This bizarrely unique mountain bike event is back for its second year. Every other Wednesday, beginning April 6 and running through May 18, join other riders for some off-road mountain bike racing on Mill Mountain - don't forget your bellbottoms.

32nd Annual Clean Valley Day

Clean Valley Council (CVC) wants you! The CVC welcomes individuals and groups to volunteer for the 32nd Annual Clean Valley Day.  Last year 76 teams and 1800 volunteers collected 34.9 tons of trash and 468 tires.Roanoke Va Clean Valley Day Picture

This valley-wide clean up promotes respect and dedication to the beautiful community we share. It's a great team-building opportunity for corporations and organizations, or some plain old family bonding time.

So pick your spot - a park, playground, roadside, stream bank, or your very own neighborhood - and get started. Anyone can participate. Heck, if you aren't feeling social you can just pick up trash at your favorite outdoor hang out. The whole point is to make our community a cleaner one.

All volunteers are provided with trash bags and gloves. All the CVC asks is that you pre-register which enables them to track the amount of trash collected.

  • April 9th, 2011
  • 8:30am:  Kick off at Vic Thomas Park
  • 9:00am - Noon:  Clean up - your location of choice
