PETE'S PICKS

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Have you had a chance to check out the weekend weather forecast? It's going to be a great weekend so be sure to find time to get outside.
In my prior life I was a professional ski bum, and one of my fondest memories is backcountry skiing on full moon nights. Guided only by our senses, and moonlight, my friends and I would shush down the hillside. It's hard to put words to the experience. Some things you just have to experience for yourself, which is why I'm excited to see the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club is offering a moonlight hike to McAfee Knob this Saturday.
Combining two of my favorite things (McAfee Knob & moonlight excursions) is something you don't want to miss. So, join the RATC this Saturday, or make your own plans to do it in the near future.
On Wednesday (3/23) there are two outdoor films worth taking a closer look at. Ferrum University is hosting Mountainfilm on Tour and Jefferson Center will be showing Bag It: Is Your Life Too Plastic?, neither will disappoint.
Have a great weekend. And if you think about it, share what you did outside this weekend on the Roanoke Outside Facebook Page - we'd love to hear what you've been up to.
Get Outside!

Moonlight Hike to McAfee Knob
McAfee Knob is the most photographed site along the Appalachian Trail. The Knob has an almost 270 degree panorama of the Catawba Valley and North Mountain to the west, Tinker Cliffs to the north, and the Roanoke Valley to the east. If you live in the Roanoke, VA region and haven't hiked to McAfee Knob by moonlight, you don't know what you're missing.
Hiking, or participating in many other outdoor activities for that matter, under the light of the moon is a great way to get a different perspective on something you do day in and day out.
The Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club is offering a guided hike to McAfee Knob. So grab your flashlight and go try something new this weekend.
Details:
- Date: 3/19
- Time: 6pm
- Hike Info: ~7 miles round trip
- RSVP: Hike leader Maya Bohler (mayabohler@cox.net or 540-344-6588)

How Seasons Affect Fitness Motivation
Dr. John R. Sharp, who teaches at Harvard and UCLA, has been practicing psychiatry for two decades. He brings his wisdom to the masses with The Emotional Calendar, a book of case studies and advice on recognizing and understanding the annual cycle of your emotions in relation to the four seasons. Here's a re-cap of the Doc's main pointers and how to tailor them for a healthy, active lifestyle throughout the year.
Motivation: It's hard to get yourself out the door to train in the dead of winter or the dog days of summer. When you feel a lack of motivation, acknowledge it, identify how the weather outside affects you, then figure out how to make yourself accountable for getting a move on. A simple way to do this is to set up regular training dates with a buddy.
Thought patterns: When you start thinking you can't, nip that thought in the bud. Defeatist thinking naturally happens when we're tried physically, mentally, or emotionally. It's important to notice when these thoughts pop into your head so you can counteract them with self-motivating, positive thoughts. Simply put, tell yourself: "Yes, I can." And believe it.
Stimulation: It's easy to fall into a rut physically and mentally if you do the same activity every day. Bring excitement back into your training routine by switching what you do day-to-day. For example, you could alternate the type of workout you do every other day, vary your routine from week to week, and/or incorporate a new activity into your routine every month.
