WEEKEND UPDATE
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
PETE'S PICKS

Enough with the rain!  Don't get me wrong, I know we need it but enough is enough.  It looks like it should clear up by the weekend and I can't wait to get outside, so here is my plan:

Thursday - Going to stop by the Six Eleven Bicycle Co. open house. Aaron Dykstra, founder of Six Eleven, builds the sweetest custom bicycles. In fact he just won his second "best in show" award at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, which is one of the reasons for this open house.  Stop in, see some of his bikes, and have a Roanoke Railhouse brew.

Saturday  - Starting the day with the St. Patrick's Day parade followed by few test rides at the Free Trek Bike Demo. If you're looking to get into mountain biking this is a great way to try out a few different types of bikes.

Sunday - Taking my son and daughter out to explore a hike we've never done before.  Can't tell you which one, but it is somewhere on this map.

Daylight Savings takes effect Sunday, so remember to set your clocks forward before going to bed Saturday night.

Get Them While They Last - Roanoke Outside Bike Jerseys

You may, or may not know that Roanoke Outside Bike JerseysRoanoke Outside sponsors a local road and mountain bike racing team, perhaps you've seen them riding around in their colorful bike jerseys.

Many have asked, "how can I get one?"  Until recently the jerseys were only available to team members, but we're excited to unveil a new version available to anyone and everyone.

Stop by Star Light Bicycles to try one on (310 2nd Street, downtown Roanoke).  $60, comes in S, M, L, and XL.  They're a perfect gift for that cyclist in your life.

All proceeds go toward making the April 16th Roanoke Twilight Criterium a bigger and badder event.

Twin River Outfitters Launches New Website

Twin River Outfitters (TRO) is a full service canoe livery that rents canoes, kayaks, and tubes on the James & Maury Rivers.

Run by twins (hence the name), Dan and John Mays, TRO offers both flat water and whitewater paddling experiences with true mountain views. They are the oldest and most experienced outfitter operating on the Upper James River and have been safely running river trips since 1978.

Whether you're looking for a relaxing afternoon of tubing, a full day of kayaking, or an overnight canoe camping trip, John and Dan guarantee a good time.  They open for spring paddling April 2, so spend a few minutes exploring their newly revamped website www.canoevirginia.net and start planning your next outing.

Outdoor Kiosk in Roanoke Airport

The next time you fly out of the Roanoke, VA airport be sureRoanoke Airport Outdoor Kiosk to spend a few minutes playing around on the new interactive, touch-screen kiosk.

Designed to raise awareness for what most of us already know, the kiosk aims to showcase the diverse outdoor recreation opportunities found within the Roanoke Region. Users can navigate through LAND (biking, hiking, camping, etc.), WATER (canoeing, kayaking, fishing, etc.), GUIDES, TRIP IDEAS, and more as they learn about one of Roanoke's greatest assets, the outdoors.

"Now a days when people fly they rarely check bags. And when they do, they spend their time staring at the baggage carousel waiting for their bags to appear. Rarely do they spend this time looking at promotional material" says Pete Eshelman of the Roanoke Regional Partnership. "That is why we chose to place this kiosk on the gate side of security. Travelers are stuck there for at least 30 minutes waiting for their flight to board, and our hope is that they'll use some of this extra time to learn why Roanoke is such a great place to live, work, and play."

So, the next time you fly, test out the kiosk, then come back to RoanokeOutside.com and post your comments on how to improve it.

It's Summer Camp Time, Now!

Today children ages six to ten spend an average of four hours in the front of a television screen every day but less than four minutes of unstructured outdoor play.  Is it any wonder why our obesity rate continues to increase along with impaired social skills?rock climber

Gone are the days when a kid would throw a backpack over his/her shoulder, say "see you later Mom", and then head outside where they would spend the day getting dirty.  Kids don't have the free time they used to have. For the majority of children, time is spent in school and participating in after-school programs/activities.

Fear not though, it's never too late to connect your kids with the outdoors, and summer camps are a great way to do it...and you don't have to go far to find some great quality camps (click here for a list of local outdoor summer camps).

Summer camp offers kids the opportunity to try something new -- zip lines, rock climbing, canoeing, backpacking, and more; they'l learn appropriate risk taking, supervised by outdoor enthusiasts and professionals. They'll make new friends, and gain independence - they'll have so much fun they won't miss the TV and video games.

Many summer camps host  an "open house", a perfect opportunity for you to meet the camp staff, ask questions, and see the facilities.  Below are a few that we know of, but most will open its doors to you at anytime, just ask.
