WEEKEND UPDATE

PETE'S PICKS

Submit a trail condition report!

Winter weather has a way of taking a toll on our trails. The constant freeze, thaw, rain, dry isn't all the good for the health of our more than 600+ miles of trails.

If you don't already have plans this weekend, why don't you head out to your favorite trail (or pick a new one), check out the conditions, and when you get home send us a trail update. Please be sure to provide specific details noting information such as downed trees, eroded trails, hazards, trash, etc.  We, in turn, will pass this information along to the hundreds of volunteers who do their part to keep our trails in the best possible condition.

In the future, consider volunteering with Pathfinders for Greenways (they're the ones who maintain much of our trail system).

Do You Recycle? Does Your Neighbor?

Reduce, reuse, recycle, upcycle...we all know we should do it, but do you?  What about your neighbors?

In Roanoke only 38% of city residents recycle.  Let's do our part to increase this number in 2011.

I live in a neighborhood where recycling couldn't be any easier.  We're provided a bin that we throw our recyclables into, and we don't even have to sort.  Yet every week when I take the bin to the curb I can't help but notice how few of my neighbors recycle...instead they have multiple trashcans overflowing with waste.

When you avoid making garbage in the first place, you don't have to worry about disposing of waste or recycling it later. Changing your habits is the key - think about ways you can reduce your waste when you shop, work and play. There's a ton of ways for you to reduce waste, save yourself some time and money, and be good to the Earth at the same time. Changing habits isn't easy, but here are a few simple things one can do to make a difference>>>

3 Things to Consider Before Buying Hiking Shoes

Whether choosing your first pair of hiking shoes or picking out a new pair because thehiking boots last ones wore out, there are a few considerations in making the right decision. In the old days, options were limited. Hiking boots were leather, they had a lugged rubber or plastic sole, and they had heavy duty cord-style laces. Those boots blazed many a long trail in the early days of hiking technology, but they caused many blisters as well.

Shoe technology has advanced so far now, shoes are not only comfortable, but can be form fitting, waterproof, ergonomic, light weight, and occasionally even affordable. There are at least two dozen reputable footwear companies in the hiking shoe business now. Waiting for the sale at the local outdoor gear shop isn't the smartest way to shop for these new shoes either. A great deal is fine, but don't sacrifice comfort to save a few bucks. We've assembled a few tips to help you choose hiking shoes that fit and work hard for you in the worst of conditions.

Banff Mountain Film Festival - 3/16

The Banff Centre has two different outdoor films festivals that travel the globe, and we are lucky to have both coming to our area this year - Mountain Film Festival (3/16) and Radical Reels (9/14).  The films you'll see are not duplicated between each festival - so be sure to attend both, as they are uniquely different and guaranteed to make your jaw drop.
