WEEKEND UPDATE

PETE'S PICKS

With a weekend weather forecast of upper 60°, I bet I won't be outside alone.  The trails will be busy, which means the rivers will be empty.

I know many of you will think this is a crazy recommendation, but I suggest a canoe float trip on either the James or New River.

There are several sections of flat water that most of you could successfully navigate without flipping over. Check out our list of canoe outfitters and head out on an adventure you'll remember - I guarantee it!

Pimp My Ride!

There has to be more than 24 hours in an East Coaster's day.  That is the only explanation for how they accomplish so much.

In addition to what you'd typically expect of a bike shop (sales and tune ups), they find time to do much more. On top of advocating for "safe routes to schools", greenway expansion, and trail maintenance, the East Coasters staff will also be attending the National Bike Summit in Washington, DC (where they'll voice cycling concerns to Congress).

At this point we were already thoroughly impressed with them...but then they go and take it up a notch with the Pimp My Ride contest.

East Coasters is supporting third grader Keegan Manning as he participates in the May 15th Tour de Cure - a series of fundraising cycling events held nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association. Keegan, now nine, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was six years old. An avid cyclist, Keegan had this to say about diabetes: "I do not like Diabetes!  I want to help find a cure to make my life and everyone else's life with Diabetes easier and without pain!"

East Coasters is providing Keegan with a Trek bicycle and leading the charge to raise $1000 on Keegan's behalf.

There are two ways you can help Keegan reach his goal:

  1. Make a donation directly to Keegan's campaign
  2. Stop by the Roanoke or Blacksburg East Coasters location by May 7th and purchase a $5 raffle ticket. On May 9th one lucky winner will receive a $1000 in bike upgrades

TED Tackles Running

TED, a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

TED recently published an endurance running talk by Born to Run author Christopher McDougall. The 15-minute lecture is loaded with really interesting facts on the history of running. Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt? In search of an answer, Christopher sets off to find a tribe of the world's greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.

This TED talk is worth listening to. When your finished watching it, you'll want to register for the Blue Ridge Marathon - America's Toughest Road Marathon!

Recycle Your Energy Bar Wrappers

We've all scarfed down a  few Clif Bars or chugged an Odwalla drink here and there in our lifetime, and when we were finished we had no choice but to throw the wrapper or bottle away because they were not recyclable.

Well that has changed thanks to TerraCycle and East Coasters.

TerraCycle's purpose is to eliminate the idea of waste by creating national recycling systems for the previously non-recyclable. The process starts by offering collect programs (many of them free) to collect waste and then convert the collected waste into a wide range of products and materials. With over 14 million people collecting waste in 11 countries TerraCycle has diverted billions of pieces of waste that are either upcycled or recycled into over 1,500 various products available at major retailers ranging from Walmart to Whole Foods Market. TerraCycle's goal is to eliminate the idea of waste by creating collection and solution systems for anything that today ends up in our trash.

Now, when you're out there hiking, biking, or just general exploring, and feel the urge to down an energy bar...you can with good conscious knowing that the wrapper can now be "upcycled".  Create your own personal collection devise (we recommend keeping a zip lock bag in your pack) and the next time your driving by East Coasters (either its Roanoke or Blacksburg location) drop off your wrappers.

East Coasters will then send the wrappers to TerraCycle where they will be "upcycled" into cool new products. For every wrapper recycled TerraCycle will donate $.02 to a local charity: In Roanoke the money will go to Pathfinders for Greenways and in Blacksburg money will support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

So get out there and start eating!
