Local Outfitter Named to Virginia Business "Best Places To Work" List

Ten months ago Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing was named in Outside magazine's third annual "Best Places to Work" list. They were ranked number 25 of 50 selected companies. Virginia Business Best Places to Work Roanoke logo

The ball keeps on rolling for them as earlier this week they were named #6 on the Virginia Business "Best Places to Work" list for small employers.

If you want to know why they made the list, all you have to do is stop by for a visit and you will quickly realize the importance of customer service.  It is the people that work there that make it such a unique venue.

Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing joins the ranks of other Roanoke employers making the list including: Advance Auto, Delta Dental of Virginia, Member One, and Freedom First Credit Union.

Greenway Bridge Closure (Temporary)

A well-traveled low-water bridge over the Roanoke River will be closed for six weeks for a culvert replacement.

On Feb. 14, the city will close the low-water bridge that connects Wiley Drive and the Roanoke River Greenway over the river just west of the U.S. 220 and Franklin Road bridges. The bridge will rgreenway bridge pictureemain closed until March 31, according to a news release from the city.

Cars and trucks won't be able to reach Smith Park from Wasena Park during the repairs. People walking, running, or using bicycles will be able to cross into Smith Park but will have to loop back to Wasena Park.

The city will post notices about the upcoming closure next week and we will keep you posted.

The work will not be a full bridge replacement, as was completed upstream last year. Instead, according to Jay Witt, a civil engineer with the city, contractors will construct a cofferdam to divert water away from one of the culverts, remove a section of the concrete bridge decking, remove the existing broken culvert and dirt filling around it, and replace it with a new culvert and concrete fill around it.

So, use this time to explore other greenways and trails...we have over 600+ miles of trails so you're bound to find something that suits your needs.

Gear Review - Sensor Gloves

We have a pretty good friend that works for Outdoor Research and he gave us an inside peek at one of their more revolutionary products.

Picture this. You just finished a ski run and are sitting on the lift chatting outdoor research sensor glovewith your friend, or you're doing some winter riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway when all of a sudden your phone rings.  By the time you unzip your pocket, pull out your phone, and take off your gloves to answer it, you've missed the call - plus your hands are now freezing.

If you're a touchscreen phone user then you can now eliminate one of those steps.

Outdoor Research's new Sensor ($70) and Ambit ($99) gloves feature TouchTec Leather that allows for touchscreen use without glove removal. Pretty sweet.

The first three people to post a comment on our blog will get something from Outdoor Research. Due to "technical" terms we can't disclose what on this page, but we guarantee you'll like it.
