WEEKEND UPDATE

PETE'S PICKS

After a long week of traveling, I'm ready for a Pete Picturevacation.

This past week I attended the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market, which is the largest gathering of the outdoor industry. More than 1000 outdoor manufacturers were on hand showcasing their latest products. Over the next few weeks I'll share a few of my favorites with you. But in the mean time I need a break, so here is my recommendation.

Take a vacation in your own town.

Find a hotel, preferably one with a pool and hot tub, research recreational opportunities that are within walking/biking (or short drive) distance, make a reservation at a new restaurant (or order a pizza to your room), watch movies, and at the end of your stay leave the clean up to housekeeping.

The new Cambria Suites, located in South Roanoke, is where my family plans to be this weekend.  Why?  Pool, hot tub, located on the greenway, bike rentals, and did I mention it has a hot tub? From the hotel you can easily go biking on the greenway, hike the Mill Mountain Trails, visit the Mill Mountain Zoo, and have dinner at Fork in The Alley, all without getting in your car.

Best in Show - Smith Goggle/Helmet Combo

This past week we attended the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market, which is the largest gathering of the outdoor industry. More than 1000 outdoor manufacturers were on hand showcasing their latest products.Smith Goggle Helmet Tractor Beam Outdoor Retailer

One of the coolest products we saw for kids is being introduced later this year by Smith Optics. It's so simple that when you learn abou it you smack yourself in the head with disbelief that no one thought of it sooner.

Smith's Tractor Beam Technology integrates their Galaxy goggle and Cosmos helmet into a single functionally integrated system that eliminates the normal strap system.  A self-locating magnetically driven buckle system makes it possible for even the littlest kids to put on and take off their goggles all by themselves. Set to retail for $80, this helmet/goggle combo is poised to make parents rejoice!

KIVA Turns 3

KIVA (Kids In the Valley Adventuring) turns three this Sunday and you're invited to help them celebrate.

KIVA is a free monthly family nature club for families in the Roanoke  Valley. KIVA focuses on three  goals: Play, Nature KIVA Adventuring logoEducation, and Volunteerism. KIVA events showcase a different park each month, provide special speakers, and point families to local volunteer efforts. The meetings are always free. No childcare is ever provided, instead grown ups are encouraged to "come prepared to make a memory with their children". KIVA also offers a free monthly newsletter which provides families with information about upcoming fun, family events around the area, as well as details about nature themed books, music, and games.

KIVA Birthday Bash details:

  • Open to all.
  • Sunday, January 30 (2-4pm) at Mill Mountain Park Discovery Center.
  • Instead of presents, please consider bringing a non-perishable food donation for Feeding America Southwest Virginia. The goal is to collect 300lbs. Much needed foods include: canned meats, fruits, soups, peanut butter, 100% juice, and rice.
  • RSVP on the KIVA Facebook page to ensure they have enough cupcakes for you.
  • If you can not attend, please still consider helping with the food drive. Walkabout Outfitters has drop off boxes at both Roanoke stores.
