PETE'S PICKS

It looks like it is going to warm up a little this weekend, which means you really have no excuse not to get outside (remember those new year's resolutions).

As the temperature warms and the snow melts, we may be happy, but the trails Pete Picturearen't. When we hike, bike, or ride horses on trails that are wet and soggy it severely damages the trails. Some trails drain better than others, and thus fair better during wet conditions. Local trail builders have told us that the Mill Mountain trails tend to drain fairly well.

A good rule of thumb - if the trail is pooling water, thick with mud, and/or you have a burning desire to walk off trail and around the mess, then you shouldn't be on the trail. If we all do our part, now, to maintain the trails health, they'll be in much better shape come spring.  And if they are in good shape in the spring local trail builders won't need to repair them and can focus their efforts on developing new trails.

Roanoke Outside has a "Trail Conditions" page that relies on users like you to post updates. If you're out there and see a trail that people should avoid, or even a trail that needs some TLC, please post it and we'll do our best to get that information to the appropriate people.

Here are a few ideas for this and next weekend:

Happy Birthday to Us!

It is hard to believe that Roanoke Outside is one year old.  That's right, one year ago today we launched the full version of RoanokeOutside.com - and what a ride it's been.Happy Birthday words

The site wouldn't be what it is without the support and contribution of people like you, and for that we thank you.

One of our goals is to continually connect our community with the outdoors. And as part of this process we track certain statistics that allow us to know if our efforts are paying off.  Here are a few fun facts from 2010 that you contributed to:

  • Event participation increased 25%
  • Greenway use increased 29.1%
  • Visitation to Douthat and Smith Mountain Lake State Parks increased 12%, nearly four times the state-wide increase of only 3.9%
  • Boat registrations increased 2.9% compared to a 0.3% decline state-wide

If you like the work we're doing, it sure would make us feel good to get some birthday messages on our Facebook page. Post a comment and be entered into a drawing to win something. We're not sure what yet but we'll have multiple winners.

Couch Sledding Challenge

Here's the deal.  We stumbled across this video and absolutely love the concept.  But we think Roanokers can do better. Get your friends together, get loose and creative, and come up with the next brilliant outdoor-related idea.  Film it, send it to us, and winners will receive a sweet prize pack.

Nature Deficit Disorder

Part of our mission at Roanoke Outside involves connecting our community with the outdoors, and more specifically getting them active. In this age of 24-hour television programming, handheld video games and smart phones, turning kids' attention from video screens to the outdoors is a challenge. As global technology creeps ever more steadily into our lives, many fear that our connection with the environment will only continue to dwindle.Nature Deficit Disorder boy on gameboy

A recent study found that children today spend an average of 6 hours each day in front of the computer and TV but less than 4 minutes a day in unstructured outdoor play, leading researchers to discover a new condition specific to this current generation that they have called "nature deficit disorder". This extreme emphasis of indoor time spent in front of screens versus outdoor play and discovery has been correlated with negative psychological and physical effects including obesity, loneliness, depression, attention problems and greater social isolation due to reduced time with friends and family.

Fear not Roanoke!  In addition to the resources available on roanokeoutside.com we are fortunate to be home to KIVA.  Kids In the Valley Adventuring (KIVA), started by Chip and Ashley Donahue, is a free monthly family nature club for families that focuses on three goals: play, nature education and volunteerism. KIVA events showcase a different park each month, provide special speakers, and point families to local volunteer efforts. The meetings are always FREE. No childcare is ever provided, instead grown ups are encourage to "come prepared to make a memory with their children". For more information, and to sign up for their newsletter, visit www.kidsadventuring.org.
