WEEKEND UPDATE

PETE'S PICKS

With Christmas a little over two weeks away I have no doubt that you havePete Picture very little free time. If you're like me, your time will be spent running from one holiday gathering to the next while trying to sneak away to buy some presents.

We've become a time-deprived society and internet shopping tends to make our lives easier. But this holiday I encourage you to support our local outdoor businesses by making an extra effort to buy local.

Supporting local businesses preserves the economic diversity of our communities and the unique character of our neighborhoods. And economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.

So let's all do our part to support local businesses and, in the process, help keep Roanoke unique.

FEATURED HIKE - DEVIL'S MARBLEYARD

The Roanoke, VA region has more than 600+ miles of hiking trails. The surrounding mountains provide the ideal setting for scenic day hikes as well as overnight camping trips. With the Appalachian Trail in our backyard and dozens of park trails, the Roanoke region offers some of the best hiking you'll ever find.

Ask any seasoned hiker to suggest a hike and Devil's Marbleyard is sure to be mentioned.

Devil's Marbleyard is a huge boulder field, many the size of a car. The Antietam quartzite found here is the result of a rise in sea level relative to the land (transgression), that occured over 500 million years ago. These boulders have tube-like structures running along them that are believed to be the fossilized cavities where worm-like creatures once lived.

Hike details:

  • Located one hour from downtown Roanoke
  • Out and back hike totaling 3 miles
  • Fairly strenuous
  • Click the map below to access a multitude of features that include the ability to download the map to your phone, email it to a friend, access an elevation profile, and more

ROSC HITS 1000TH EVENT

On January 15, 2011 the ROSC will celebrate their 1000th event...and you're invited!

The day begins with a hike to the top of Sharp Top mountain. This is a classic 3-mile hike, 1.5 miles up where you are rewarded with a 360° view, and then 1.5 miles back down to the Peaks of Otter Lodge. And what better way to finish the day off than with a "1000th Event Celebration" at Blue 5 restaurant.ROSC Club Pic

You can participate in one or both events, but either way you have to become a member of the ROSC first.

So, what is the ROSC?

ROSC stands for the Roanoke Outdoor & Social Club, and their name pretty much sums up what they're all about.  ROSC is your opportunity to meet others who share your passion for the outdoors. It's free to join and you only participate in the events that interest you.

Here's how it works:

  • Visit the ROSC Meetup.com website and register. Specify the types and frequency of communications (emails) you want to receive.
  • Once on the site you'll see message boards, discussions, photos, and events already scheduled.  You can even submit an idea of your own and if one of the organizers likes the idea they will turn it into an actual event.
  • Periodically you'll receive an email announcing a event. If you want to participate just click on the RSVP link. If you don't,  you just hit the delete button.
  • Once registered navigate to the list of Upcoming Meetups for January 15 where you'll find all the details on the Sharp Top hike and 1000th Event Celebration.

127 HOURS and COUNTING

By now you may have seen ads or a trailer for the film 127 HOURS, which127 hours hit theaters back in November. Directed by Danny Boyle (Slum Dog Millionaire), the film is based on the story of Aron Ralston and his shocking self-amputation incident in the Utah desert in 2003. The film recounts the story of Ralston canyoneering solo in Blue John Canyon of Canyonlands National Park, where an immense boulder fell and pinned his right forearm. He was trapped for five days, and, nearing death from dehydration, Ralston took a knife and amputated his lower right arm to get free. 127 HOURS is a grisly tale, and one that rocketed Ralston to renown and fame as a never-die outdoorsman.

There is a rather intense emotional bond Aron develops with his Nalgene water bottle, as it becomes his literal lifeline while trapped. In response to the film, Nalgene has released their own limited edition 127 HOURS bottle, and are giving fans the chance to win their own...signed by James Franco, the actor who plays Aron.

For your chance to win, go to the Nalgene Facebook page and give them your best story involving a Nalgene bottle--there are already quite a few interesting ones. Make sure you submit yours before December 22nd.
