PETE'S PICKS

We all know that we could do a better job protecting the environment. Going green can seem like a daunting taskPete Picture when you consider how already busy your life is - it can seem overwhelming. The best approach is by taking baby steps. You choose something that is important to you and simply take it for a test drive.

Visiting the Green Living & Energy Expo is a great way to learn the latest about energy conservation and sustainable living. So here is how my weekend looks:

  • Attend the Green Living & Energy Expo (10am-4pm) at the Roanoke Civic Center.
  • Purchase tickets to "My Son Pinocchio" (if you have kids that is).
  • Have dinner at the new Lucky Restaurant in downtown Roanoke. I recommend the trout or lamb, both are from local farms.
  • Hike to Dragon's Tooth.

BEST PLACES FOR AFTER-WORK BIKE RIDES

With the Roanoke, Virginia, Region becoming a bicycle hotspot, it's no wonder people are swapping desk chairs for bike seats before, after - or even during - work hours.

Mix a climate perfect for year-round biking with terrain that varies from flat valleys to rolling hills and steep Blue Ridge Mountains and you've got something for every road or mountain biker of any ability.

With trails looming just beyond a vibrant urban core, it's possible to take a lunch-time ride up a mountain or log miles on greenways and be back in the office in one hour or less.

For other bicyclists, the outdoors is a great way to unwind after work.

"In some places you can ride 45 minutes and still be in suburbs. Here, in less than 15 minutes on a bike, I'm on the Blue Ridge Parkway," says Stratton Delaney, owner of Starlight Bicycles who moved to the region from Richmond. "There's an abundance of safe roads and scenic views. Even the neighborhood roads are interesting. You've got so many options to get on a bike and get out of town. In many cities, there's only a few ways to safely escape suburban sprawl."

Delaney credits the region's greenway system... Read the rest of the story here>>>

BIKER FLASH MOB

Huh? That's what we said when we first read biker flash mob. The first thing that popped into our heads was the image of a burly man on a Harley Davidson flashing people as he cruises down the Blue Ridge Parkway.

But upon further investigation we were excited to learn that the biker flash mob is the brain child of River Laker and Emerging Artists.

According to Wikipedia, a flash mob is a large group of people who  assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and pointless act for a brief time, then disperse.

Watch a few videos of some classic flash mobs:

So, why a biker flash mob?

The 2010 Commonwealth of Virginia Governor's Transportation Conference is meeting at the Hotel Roanoke December 8-10 where they will discuss transportation challenges ranging from heavy congestion in NOVA to the need to make transportation investments to support economic development.

The purpose of this biker flash mob is to raise awareness of "biking as transportation", and to stimulate discussions. Improving bike infrastructure (bike lanes, signage, etc.) is more important now than ever, and now is the time to plan for future demands and needs.

How you get involved;

  • When:    12/8 (6:30-7:30pm).
  • Where:   Hotel Roanoke. Meet outside the main entrance.
  • Who:       Anyone who supports biking for transportation.  Pedestrians are encouraged too.
  • What:      At 6:30pm the group will ride bikes around the roundabout at the front door of
the Hotel Roanoke for several minutes and then depart as a group.
  • Dress:     Business attire - no lycra.
  • Options:  Adorn your bicycle with old toy cars tied to a rope that you drag behind your bike.
  • Details:   Visit the Facebook event page for details. If you don't use Facebook email River Laker and
let him know you want to be involved.
