Aerotek Opens in Roanoke                                                           

Aerotek, a global staffing provider, recently opened an office in downtown Roanoke to support employment in the Roanoke Region with technical, professional, and industrial recruiting and staffing services.

 

"Aerotek's confidence in the Roanoke market is further evidence that the economy is emerging from the recession," said Beth Doughty, executive director of the Roanoke Regional Partnership. 

 

Maryland-based Aerotek will employ a staff of up to five people within the next year and will recruit and place individuals in positions throughout the region.  The new regional office is located at 210 S. Jefferson St.

Outdoor Economy Growing                                     

On land and water - more people are enjoying the outdoors and making it a career in the Roanoke Region.  While recent national data indicates the popularity of outdoor recreation is increasing, the Roanoke Region is ahead of the curve at the state and national levels, suggesting that the region's mix of amenities and assets is more competitive than many other communities.  The outdoor branding initiative of the Roanoke Regional Partnership is having an effect. 

  •  Visitors to the Virginia State Parks in the Roanoke Region were up 12 percent in 2009 from the previous calendar year, nearly four times the state wide increase of 3.9 percent.  (Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation)
  • Roanoke River Greenway trail counts increased 29.1 percent over 2009 usage.  (Roanoke Valley - Alleghany Regional Commission)
  • Boat registrations are up 2.9 percent in the region from 2006 to 2009, compared to a slight decline state-wide of 0.3 percent.  (Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries)
  • The industry group which includes outfitters, guides, and other sporting and recreational employers grew by 8.3 percent in the region (3rd Quarter 2008 to 3rd Quarter 2009), compared to declines of 1.4 percent at the state level and 2 percent at the national level.  (Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Roanoke, Virginia Region Boast High Percentage of Science and Engineering Degrees  

According to newly released data from the Census American Community Survey, 47.5 percent of all bachelor's degrees in the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) are related to science and engineering. That's 4 percent higher than the national average.


  •  The data reflects the region's growing number of engineering and advanced manufacturing companies in the region.  In particular, the health care/life sciences industries grew in the Roanoke Region by 8.88 percent between 2006 and 2009, a period that saw a slight decline nationally (-.29 percent).
  • There are nearly 90,000 undergraduate students at 21 institutions of higher learning, all within a 60 mile radius, graduating over 1,500 engineering students per year.   With a total population (an hour in any direction from downtown Roanoke,) of more than 833,000, that means a per-capita undergraduate college student ratio of 0.108. That leads higher-education hotbeds such as San Francisco Bay (0.060), Research Triangle (0.057) and Boston-Cambridge (0.049.)
