PETE'S PICKS

The GET OUTSIDE Weekend Update newsletter will be taking next week off.  Pete Picture

Why? Because I plan on eating way too much turkey and pumpkin pie.

Here are two quick ideas to connect with family and friends, and help shed a few pounds in the process:

  • On Thanksgiving Day participate in the StellarOne Drumstick Dash. They have a great motto that rings true: "Move your feet so others can eat!". All proceeds help the Rescue Mission feed the hungry.
  • Choose a hike you've never done before and get exploring. It is hard to beat quality time with family and friends spent outside.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Saving 2 Billion Gallons of Water - One Community at a Time.

Local water conservation is the most direct way to reduce water bills and cut energy costs while also managing a precious resource. To help raise awareness about water conservation and to offer practical solutions through water-saving bathroom fixtures, a national mobile awareness campaign is traveling across the United States.

Water shortages are forecast to hit 36 states in the U.S. by 2013. Many communities already are experiencing a tighter water supply.  The Responsible Bathroom Water Conservation Tour, sponsored by American Standard®, will show how an average four-person household can save 48,326 gallons of water a year using water-saving bathroom fixtures.

10 TIPS FOR TAKING GREAT OUTDOOR PHOTOS

If you're like most outdoor enthusiasts you are always on the hunt for the  photo that perfectly captures a moment.  A photo that allows your friends and family to "be" there with you.McAfee Knob roanoke Virginia

Here are 10 tips for taking better photos:

  1. Rule of thirds:  Rarely should you put the main focus of your image in the middle of the frame. Divide your frame into thirds and place your focal point to the left or right or top or bottom.

  2. Face shots:  When taking a photo of a person always get their face in the shot.

  3. Say no to "cheese":  Rarely does a forced smile look good. Instead capture people in organic situations.  Let people do their thing but be ready with the camera.
