PETE'S PICKS

It looks like mother nature has a beautiful weekend in store for us - 70° and sunny!Pete Picture

My son has a soccer tournament this weekend so I'll be out of town. But that won't stop me from exploring. When I visit new areas, and have some free time, I log on to geocaching.com.

Geocaching is often described as a game of high-tech hide and seek, sharing many aspects of orienteering and treasure hunting.

So if you're looking for something new to do this weekend, why not explore the treasures hidden right in your own backyard.  Click here to learn more about geocaching in Roanoke.

WALK OR RUN YOUR WAY TO A HEALTHIER YOU

Every day, we hear that Americans are becoming more obese; now the number of obese individuals exceeds one in four people. The average American male has gained 17.1 pounds (20.2 in VA) and the average American female has added 15.4 pounds (16.7 in VA) since 1988. Did you know that many businesses base their decision on where to locate based on obesity and smoking rates?

As you head in to the holiday season now is the time to take action. It is inevitable that you'll overeat (and regret it later) but the one thing you can control is your fitness plan.running shoe picture

The organizers of the National College Blue Ridge Marathon & Half Marathon are encouraging the Roanoke community to get active. Their event is six months away (April 16) and to entice you to participate they are offering a 25% discount (use code NOKE at checkout).

Commit yourself now by registering to walk or run the half marathon, or step up to the plate for the full marathon.  Either way, six months is the perfect amount of needed training time.

Roanoke offers plenty of walking/running opportunities to keep you on track.  Personal and financial accountability are the keys to success. Studies show that people who register and pay for an event alongside a friend are much more likely to stick to the plan and ultimately reach their goal.  So grab a friend this weekend and register for a few events together.

Need more help? The folks at Fleet Feet Sports can help you. They are passionate about running and will answer all your questions. They even have a No Boundaries program designed for beginner walkers and runners hoping to compete in their first 5K.

NEVER SUCK AGAIN - GEAR REVIEW

This past summer we had the opportunity to meet the founder and owner of Geigerrig, a new brand that is making waves in the hydration category.

The company produces hydration packs and systems with a unique point of difference; they allow users to spray, rather than suck, the water out of the Ogwa-powered bladders, thus making it easy to drink, share, cool off, and clean up.  They have a pretty cool tagline too - "Never Suck Again".

Geiggerig Hydration Packs

Their pressurized system eliminates the need to suck on a bite valve, meaning hydration on the go is easy and continuous rather than hurried and gluttonous.

Their system uses a two-chamber hydration bladder that keeps the pressurized chamber separate from the water chamber. This eliminates the risk of depressurization and minimizes sloshing by keeping the mass of water under pressure.

Starlight Bicycles Geigerrig Packs

Key components:

  • Slide top and wide mouth for ease of cleaning and drying
  • Pressure bulb to pressurize reservoir
  • Surge protector with on/off switch
  • Optional in-line water filter (treats up to 50 gallons)
  • Four sizes to choose from (500-1600 cubic inches)

Watch a You Tube video to learn more or stop by Starlight Bicycles (the only local distributor) and check one out in person.

NEED A NEW LICENSE PLATE?

Here is your chance to support one of our greatest assets, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and get a pretty cool retro license plate in the process.

VA BRP Plate

FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway is sponsoring the Blue Ridge Parkway specialty license plate in Virginia and needs approximately 75 more people to step up and take action.

A little background...there are more than 200 specialty license plates out there, all designed to show support for everything from the college you attended to breast cancer awareness. But before a license plate idea can become a reality there are some hoops that must be jumped through.

To make a plate a reality, it must receive 350 applications (along with $25 payment).  After this benchmark is reached, the state of Virginia will begin production (read more about the specialty plate creation process). The FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway license plate needs 75 more applications by the end of November.

FRIENDS will receive a portion of the plate fee, and then donate 100% of these proceeds to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Not only do you get a cool plate, you're also helping to support "America's Favorite Drive," the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Applying for the Blue Ridge Parkway plate couldn't be easier (you do NOT currently have to be up for plate renewal. You can do this at anytime), simply:

  • Print the Department of Motor Vehicles license plate application form.
  • Mail the completed form, along with the $25 fee to:
FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway, PO Box 20986, Roanoke VA 24018.
  • FRIENDS will deposit your money into our specially designated account.
  • Once the necessary 350 applications have been received, you will be notified by the DMV.

PAPER or PLASTIC? - or DO YOU BYOB?

Paper or Plastic?

That's the question you typically hear every time you go to the grocery store.  Slowly the question is evolving into "Paper, plastic, or Did you Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB)?"
plastic bags
Single-use plastic bags (the type you get in grocery stores and most retail shops) are taking a toll on our environment. Plastics take hundreds of years to break down and most types never truly biodegrade. As a result bags litter the streets and streams, and animals often get entangled in the debris or mistake it for food.

Around 100 billion petroleum-based plastic bags are used each year in the United States, requiring an estimated 12 million barrels of oil each year. Sadly, less than 5% of these bags are recycled each year and cities, counties, and non-profit organizations must pay millions of dollars each year to clean up plastic litter.

And it is arguable if paper is much better. Paper bags use as much or more oil in their manufacture and distribution and they use about 15 times more fresh water to produce. Unlike plastic bags which remain inert, paper bags produce methane gas which is a much worse "greenhouse gas" than carbon dioxide.

People can debate plastic versus paper until the cows come home but it is hard to argue the fact that using your own reusable cloth bag is clearly the best solution.

A few U.S. cities have plastic bag bans and/or fees in place, but most do not. What do you think?
