PETE's PICKS

Pete Eshelman

Come out for the Vinton Fall Festival and 5K run/walk!

The festival starts at 8 am with a 5K run, followed by a pancake breakfast at the VFW.

Plan to spend the day at the fall festival-- enjoy live music on two stages, enter your pooch in the popular "Doggy Pageant" and take an old fashioned hay ride. The festival will include activities for the kids, farmer's market activities, and over 90 different craft vendors to shop from. Make sure to come early - the event ends at 4pm.

Get OUTSIDE!

Tragedy spurs brother to pedal for a cause

Dan Petersen was willing to cross the continent to help his sister.

Emily Jones was 25, widowed when her husband died tragically stuck in a Utah cave, and not sure how she would make ends meet.

But between the outpouring of emotional support driven by the national exposure John Jones' death received and other financial issues disappearing through the kindness of strangers, Emily Jones figured she'd be OK.

So she told her little brother if he wanted to ride a bicycle across the country to raise some money, he should do it for other young widows and widowers.

Petersen, of Salem, latched onto the Liz Logelin Foundation, a nonprofit that provides short-term financial help to widows and widowers with dependent children. He, his friend Eric Maughan of Salem and cousin Jonathan Miller of Trace City, Tenn., will dip the wheels of their bicycles in the Atlantic Ocean at Virginia Beach on Monday before heading toward San Diego, where they expect to arrive in mid-December.

How to Predict Rain from the Clouds

But if you're camping for several days, and didn't check the weather beforehand, it's a good idea to
know cloud names, formations and what they mean for your trip. If you didn't know anything about clouds before, this list will give you a basic understanding of what the clouds above might be bringing in the near future.

Cirrus Clouds
Cirrus means "curl, fringe" and these clouds are the airy, wispy clouds that are high in the atmosphere and usually predict that a cold or warm front is on its way, as well as a change in weather. These clouds will typically cause a halo-effect around the sun or moon. If these clouds start bunching together, sometimes called a mackerel sky, rain is on the way. If rain is coming, the halo effect around the sun or moon will shrink, meaning the clouds are becoming denser. When they become thicker and drop in height, expect within two days.

Stratus Clouds
Stratus means,
