WEEKEND UPDATE

PETE's PICKS

Pete Eshelman

Did you know that there are more than 600 miles of trails in the Roanoke, VA region?

Why not help add a few more!

Saturday is National Public Lands Day, the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2009, 150,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants, planted trees and restored our water resources. Volunteers are building a new trail on Mill Mountain this Saturday and need your help - click here for the details. Make a day out of it by visiting the Mill Mountain Zoo when you are finished.

What else?

Last
week I issued a challenge and I believe in it so much that I am going to issue it again (in case you didn't catch it last week).  My challenge stems from the Everyday Thinking post. I challenge each of you to prepare at least one meal this week that consists entirely of local foods. Typical items in most meals have traveled an average of 1500 miles before they reach your plate. If every family ate just one meal a week composed of locally raised meats and produce we would reduce weekly oil consumption by more than 1.1 million barrels of oil. So my recommendation is to discover what your local farmer's market has to offer and get cooking! Let us know if you are taking the challenge by posting a comment on our blog.

Get OUTSIDE!
