Annual Fall Waterways Cleanup
The Roanoke Region offers the best of both worlds: mountains and water. Put the two together and welcome to paradise. With the largest freshwater lake in Virginia, as well as dozens of creeks and challenging rivers, there is no limit on the fun you can have on the water.

But every now and then it's time make sure you're doing your part to ensure we keep our outdoors clean and pristine.

Please mark your calendar now for October 2nd.

Volunteers from all over the Roanoke Region will be out in force picking up trash, tires, and more from our creeks, streams, and rivers as part of the Clean Valley Council 10th Annual Fall Waterways Cleanup Day (more than 600 volunteers collected 23 tons of trash and 138 tires last year).

  • Come alone, or better yet, get your civic group or business involved
  • Clean your favorite waterway on your own, or join the large gathering at Wasena Park
  • The organized event runs from 8:30 to 11:30am (no timeframe if you are doing your own waterway)
  • Picnic celebration afterward at Wasena Park (11:30am - 2:00pm)
  • Supplies provided by Clean Valley Council
  • Call 540.345.5523 with any questions

In order to measure the success of the event (and the amount of trash collected), the Clean Valley Council kindly asks that you register for the event by September 17.

Let's work together to keep our waterways clean, safe, and beautiful.

Top 5 Healthy Fruits
An apple a day just doesn't cut it anymore and too many apples could make you fat. That's the advice of Iva Young, a nutritional expert who warns that the wrong kinds of fruits can actually do more harm than good. "We really should be smart about the fruits we consume," said Young, author of "Healthy Mom," a book about health, nutrition, and exercise.

So, which fruits offer the biggest health boost?

Take your best guess and then click here to see the top five healthy fruits!

Do You Hate Biking Uphill?
All you mountain bikers out there take note! biker pushing uphill

Here is an opportunity that, to the best of our knowledge, has never come around.

Roanoke Parks & Recreation is taking what many would say is the most painful part of mountain biking out of the equation - the uphills.

Let gravity do the work!

You'll have two opportunities to ride two different mountain bike areas and get a shuttle ride back to the top.  That's right...you ride down, they drive you back up.
