PETE's PICKS What's my recommendation? Did you know that there are more than 600 miles of trails in the Roanoke region? Start your weekend off with a new hike!
After your hike head to Elmwood Park for Microfestivus. Although I personally won't be there (I'm off to the beach), be sure to stop by the Roanoke Outside tent where Lee will be handing out outdoor gear (buffs, socks, bottles, croakies, GU, etc.). He'll be giving the stuff out at random but if you bring a friend and they sign up for the newsletter you're more likely to get something.

Gear Review - nPower PEG
Last
week I attended the Outdoor Retailer tradeshow which is the largest
outdoor industry gathering in the world. Let's just say that some
exhibits were bigger than my house - seriously...two stories and all.
I
got to see the latest tents, backpacks, shoes, jackets, boats, and
more. Over the next few weeks I'll share a few of the more interesting
products.
As
I was wondering the floor I ran into Aaron and Jill who shared with me
the coolest device I've seen in a while - the nPower® PEG (Personal Energy Generator).
The nPower® PEG is
the world's first kinetic energy charger for hand-held electronics like
cell phones, Mp3 players, GPS, & more. Just place it in your
backpack and walk. The PEG captures & stores your kinetic energy as
you walk, run, or bike.
When
I go for a short outing I try to leave my phone, ipod, etc. behind, but
my wife and kids insist I take my phone with me (for emergency
purposes) when I go on longer jaunts. The newer phones don't hold a
charge like they used to and often times the battery dies as it uses
more energy when it is "searching for service". I believe I've now found
a solution. $149.99. - Pete

More Microfestivus Ticket Winners
For
the past two weeks we've been asking readers to tell us why they
deserve to win VIP tickets to Microfestivus. Originally we were only
going to have one winner, but the comments we've received were very
funny and as a result we've been able to dig up a few extra tickets.
This week's winner is Robin Davis.
"I think I deserve the free tickets because I have made 2010 the year to turn my
life around and become more active. In February I started riding my old
Schwin around Rocky Mount (can you say "hills are our friends"?). My
husband bought me a Motobecane in March so that we
could kick it up a notch and we started riding the greenways in
Roanoke. For our anniversary he bought us a tandem so that we could
enjoy even more "togetherness". On my 45th birthday in July when the
temps hit the upper 90s, we rode 40 miles in Roanoke which included
about 20 on the Parkway from 220 to 460. I never ever thought I would
be an outside person but now I love it. We plan to do our first century
ride at the Outer Banks in November. Love the website and thanks for
the helpful information! We will be at Microfestivus, and of course on
our bikes!"
As we said, we were able to find a few more tickets and are pleased to give one each to Jim Light and Dan Laird - both of which seriously cracked us up with their witty comments.
Even if you didn't win this is a great event that you don't want to miss.
- Microfestivus website
- August 14 - Elmwood Park (noon - 6pm)
-

We've heard a rumor that the event may fill up, which means you want to purchase your tickets in advance. Online ticket sales ends at 11pm Friday evening.
-
Roanoke
Outside will have a tent set up - be sure to stop by and hang out for a
while. We'll be giving away random stuff we found lying around the
