WEEKEND UPDATE

PETE's PICKS
What's my recommendation?

Yes I know it's still summer, but if you want to truly experience the fall foliage you need to reserve a campsite or cabin at Douthat State Park now.

Douthat State Park was named one of the nation's 10 best state parks by the Outside Family Vacation Guide. The park is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the original six Virginia State Parks that opened in 1936. It's nestled in the Alleghany Mountains and features some of  Virginia's most outstanding scenery.

    • More than 43 miles of trails

    • Tent and RV camping

    • Cabin rentals (built by the Civilian Conservation Corps)

    • Click here to make a reservation

* If you deviate from this order your weekend will not pan out as you hoped. It is
crucial that you reserve a boat before inviting your friends :).

Come Help Us!
Kiwanis is partnering with the City and Pathfinders for Greenways to install mileage markers on Roanoke River Greenway in Roanoke City. This Saturday August 7 is the big day. This is a 5 mile stretch and we need many hands to make it go lightly. Please join the volunteers, starting at Wasena Park at 7:00 am.

Park in large lot off of Winchester Ave.  Assemble at the picnic shelter.

Wear old clothes and gloves.

Bring Shovels, Rakes, Post hole diggers, Levels, Pry bars, tape measure, Buckets and Gloves.

Tasks: We will be removing debris from pre-drilled holes every tenth of a mile, putting posts in the ground, leveling and pouring concrete to secure the post.  There will be a demonstration of post installation, then we will disburse in teams to designated locations to begin the work.

Hope you can help.

Giant Waterproof Backpack - Gear Review
It is obscenely huge. It fastens shut and watertight with a roll-top closure. A backpack harness system lets you strap it on and hike, ferrying immense loads through airports and down backwoods portage trails alike.

The SealLine Pro Packs are essentially giant vinyl duffel bags. They open wide to reveal a capacious hold that can swallow about 7,000 cubic inches worth of gear.Aid Station Mile Breakdown Chart

I have used a SealLine Pro Pack on a half-dozen trips this year, including for international travel as well as on a raft excursion where the pack was tied to the deck. At $169.95, the handy and bombproof bag - mine's been dubbed "Big Yellow" - has proven its worth a few times over.

The Pro Pack is 100 percent waterproof for terrestrial use. Rain, sleet, snow, or dripping cargo holds are no match for the thick vinyl fabric and roll-down top.

If you plan to use it whitewater rafting, Pro Pack manufacturer Cascade Designs (www.cascadedesigns.com) says it will withstand quick submersions and will float if dropped in the water.

The pack has a reinforced vinyl bathtub-style bottom and tough vinyl sides. Webbing straps cinch to tighten down the top. Durable buckles snap it shut.

The pack's adjustable suspension system is supportive for big loads. There's a padded hip belt and a grab handle to lift the... Click Here to Read More>>>

Program trains for green energy jobs
The free training is for people who are employed, underemployed or jobless, for the young, middle-aged and older. For employers too, said Randall, a regional program specialist for the Western Virginia Workforce Development Board.

Randall's mission includes spreading the word about the training and, ultimately, to connect trainees with potential employers or to help companies and their current workers get up to speed on green building.

His territory includes the cities of Covington, Roanoke and Salem and the counties of Alleghany, Botetourt, Craig, Franklin and Roanoke. A colleague handles cities and counties south of Roanoke.

Every federally funded program needs an acronym. In this case, it is CREATES -- Construction, Retrofitting and Energy-efficiency Assessment Training and Employment System.

A $3.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor funds the regional effort, which extends south through the New River Valley to Bristol.

Christiansburg-based Community Housing Partners was the grant recipient. Partners include Virginia Tech, NewVA Corridor Technology Council, New River Community College, Wytheville Community College, Virginia Western Community College, the New River Center for Energy Research and Training, the New River/Mount Rogers Workforce Investment Board and Randall's outfit.

Opportunities for training range from one-day certification classes to a semester or two of course work at participating community colleges.

Breaking News - Blue Ridge Parkway
FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway is partnering with the Blue Ridge Parkway Association to sponsor a Blue Ridge Parkway specialty license plate in Virginia. The plate costs $25.

Help us TODAY by applying for your Blue Ridge Parkway license plate!

To make this plate a reality, we must receive 350 applications.  After this benchmark is reached, the state of Virginia will begin production. (read more about the specialty plate creation process)

FRIENDS will receive a portion of the plate fee.  We will then donate 100% of those monies to the Blue Ridge Parkway.  So, not only do you get a unique plate, you're also helping to support "America's Favorite Drive", the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We are hoping to make this plate a reality by the 75th anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway, coinciding with the Parkway's 75th Anniversary celebration.  What an anniversary gift that would be!
Applying for the Blue Ridge Parkway plate couldn't be easier, simply:

  1. Print the Dept. of Motor Vehicles license plate application form.
  2. We have checked the "Other" box and typed in Blue Ridge Parkway for you.
  3. Mail the completed form, along with $25 for the Blue Ridge Parkway plate, to:  FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway, PO Box 20986, Roanoke, VA  24018.
  4. FRIENDS will deposit your money into our specially designated license plate bank account.
  5. Once the necessary 350 applications have been received, you will be notified by the DMV.

Thank you in advance for joining our effort to make this plate a reality.  The National Park Service and FRIENDS truly appreciate it.
