What's my recommendation?

PeteEshelmanphoto

It's going to be a hot one...so my recommendation this week keeps you in your vehicle for a portion of the time and only hiking for 30-40 minutes (but you are rewarded with an amazing view).

If you've never heard of, or been to, the Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory this is the trip for youThe observatory is located along the WV/VA border and is worth the trip (photos). Here's my recommended itinerary:

Practice Orienteering Course
With the recent success of the Gear Junkie Treasure Hunt we've been asked, on several occasions, if there were any permanent orienteering courses set up in the Roanoke area that people could practice their map and compass/orienteering skills on.

Local adventure racer Mark Lattanzi has created a 24 point permanent orienteering course at the Mountain Lake Conservancy. There are six courses to choose from (beginner to advance). Click here for the details. Check it out this Saturday and you can also try out some kayaks as part of the Blue Ridge Mountains Sports Demo Day.

Animals Come to Life at Night - Mill Mountain Zoo

Bo the wolverine is wrestling with a stick.

It's a big stick, longer than he is. Bo rolls onto his back and holds it in the air, then clasps it to his furry chest. Four people are watching, but he doesn't seem to care how silly he looks.

"I've never seen a wolverine that chased his tail before, but this one does," said Mill Mountain Zoo Executive Director Mike Janis.

It is dusk at the zoo, and the critters are getting frisky.

In a way, it's a shame that zoos are open in the daytime because so many animals prefer to come out at night. As the sun goes down, furry creatures that snooze through the day begin to rouse. They snarl, they prowl, they stalk. Not infrequently, they play.

Zoo visitors can see the animals every Thursday this summer until 8 p.m. On other days, the zoo closes at 4:30. The Zoo Choo continues to run on the half hour on Thursday nights. Star City Smoothies is open till closing time as well, said spokeswoman Lisa Uhl.

On a recent Thursday night, visitors were conspicuously lacking. But the animals, many of whom snooze away hot summer days in the shade, were in fine form.

Bendable Bike?
Via Daily Mail

A young designer has invented a revolutionary folding bicycle that will stop thieves in their tracks.

Kevin Scott, 21, designed the space-age bike that wraps around a lamp post so it can be locked-up safely - without the need for a lock or chain.

The De Montfort University graduate used a ratchet system built into the frame of the bike to allow it to wrap around a pole, enabling the lock to be wrapped through both wheels and the frame.

On his bike: Kevin Scott demonstrates that his revolutionary folding design can be ridden like a traditional bicycle  Easy to bend: The frame becomes bendable after just a few seconds' work with a ratchet
Step 3: Securing the bike around a lamp post is easy, allowing it to be locked securely  Step 4: The frame and both wheels are securely locked together
Securing all the bike's components within the lock was his aim in creating the new bike. It also allows the bike to be stored in small spaces.

The frame can be ratcheted tight to allow the bike to be ridden like a normal bike, but it can be quickly loosened to allow the frame to be bent back on itself.

As such, finding a spot to lock it up on London's busy streets is a cinch - you simply wrap it around the nearest lamppost.
