PETE's PICKS
What's my recommendation?Pete Eshelman

Saturday is National Wildlife Federation Backyard Campout day!

Do you remember your first camp fire, roasting marshmallows, or sleeping in your first tent?

The Great American Backyard Campout is a simple way to stay connected with nature and create lasting memories. Get started by planning your own backyard campout right now. Register today and you'll have access to fun family activities, delicious healthy recipes and campfire favorites!

If you are looking for a place to go camping, check out our list of local campsites.

On Sunday head to downtown Roanoke for Ciclovia. During Ciclovía, Roanoke Citizens have the opportunity to get out in the streets and try different physical activities with their families, like, aerobics, hula hooping, or just relax, shop/dine in downtown, sit by the market street and enjoy the day. It's a great people-watching opportunity!

Get OUTSIDE!

Countdown to Gear Junkie Treasure Hunt       countdown clock
16 days - a little over two weeks - to go! Gear Junkie's "Treasure Hunt: Roanoke" event is fast approaching, and the field is filling up!

The Treasure Hunt is a "$40,000+ gear extravaganza" happening at Explore Park, on July 11. Join Roanoke Outside and the Gear Junkie team for a gear hunt the likes of which have never before been seen in the world outdoors.

Everyone who enters will walk away with something - we guarantee it!  Items include: tents, backpacks, jackets, shoes, GPS, hydration packs, watches, knives, headlamps, sleeping bags, stoves, sunglasses, hammocks, car racks, and more.

Still not clear on what this entails?

  • There are two categories to choose from: beginner or advanced. If you can read and follow a simple trail map you can enter the beginner category. You don't need to be able to use a compass...just follow the map.

  • You have two hours to visit as many checkpoints as you can. Each checkpoint is worth a certain amount of points.  The harder the checkpoint is to reach the more points it is worth

  • When you are done you add up your points and then visit the onsite outdoor store where you can redeem your points for gear.

  • More details and registration forms are here: http://gearjunkie.com/treasure-hunt-roanoke.

  • Use the promo code "Roanoke" to get $5 off your entry.

Group Endorses Windfarm on Poor Mtn.        windfarm
A Roanoke Valley nonprofit organization that promotes energy conservation and the reduction of carbon emissions has endorsed a controversial windmill farm on Poor Mountain. The Roanoke Valley Cool Cities Coalition says the turbines would be cleaner than burning coal.
The Chicago-based Invenergy company proposes to place 15 to 18 windmills standing some 440 feet high on the ridgeline near the Bent Mountain community.

The Roanoke Valley Cool Cities Coalition board of directors unanimously endorsed the plan earlier this month. Diana Christopulos, the coalition's principal officer, said Monday that while her organization has given away thousands of fluorescent light bulbs in recent years, "we know that can't solve the whole problem. ... We have to use clean, renewable energy."

Independence Day Three Race Weekend
What are your plans for July 4th weekend?  ID3 Races Roanoke Virginia logo

If you don't have plans yet then take a moment to learn more about the ID3 Races. Grab a bite to eat, shop, pick up some produce from the Farmers Market, or just browse the streets of downtown Roanoke while watching a fast pace cycling event. Think your eyes can keep up with the participants? This is an event you do not want to miss!

Each day involves a unique cycling event.  On Saturday riders are timed as they race UP Mill Mountain. And on Sunday and Monday cyclists will be speeding their way through the streets of downtown Roanoke. Optimal viewing (and eating) can be found right in front of the Texas Tavern.

Volunteers are Needed! Roanoke Outside will give you a free water bottle if you volunteer.  Email us and we'll put you in touch with the volunteer coordinator who will let you know which shifts (2-3 hours) are available.
