PETE's PICKS
What's my recommendation?
In case you weren't aware, May if Bike Month. There are a series of events taking place throughout the month. Visit www.bikeroanoke.com for a complete list. Here are few taking place this weekend that deserve a second look: - Friday is "Clean Commute Day". What does that mean? Quite simply the goal is to get as many people as possible to use alternative transportation on that day (bike, walk, bus, carpool, etc.). Click here to learn more.
- Do you like biscuits? Celebrate Bike Month with a delicious breakfast at downtown favorite Tudor's Biscuit World. Every Friday in May, between 7:00 and 8:00 A.M.,
Tudor's is offering a fantastic breakfast deal: $2.00 for a
three-topping biscuit and small coffee to anyone who arrives by bike!
Just show proof of your ride (for example, your bike helmet) and you're
good to go!
- Saturday is the 2nd annual Ciclovia. This is a great family event. One mile of streets around the Market area are closed to cars. During Ciclovía, citizens have the opportunity to get out in the
streets and try different physical activities with their families,
like, aerobics, hula hooping, or just relax, shop/dine in downtown, sit
by the market street and enjoy the day.

Free Mountains of Misery Entry
Doe s the idea of riding 104 miles and climbing 10,000' get your blood pumping? What about 125 miles with 13,000' of climbing?
It obviously appeals to Mike Morris and Paula Dahl who are the winners of a free race entry!
Mike sent us this picture which is from the very first Mountains of Misery ride. Our hats go off to him for enduring. He was told it was just a normal century ride. To top it off, he had run a 10k the day before. With his smallest gear being a 42/21 he was glad his good friend Jim Wright told him to bring his sandals along.

This is a picture of Paula finishing a 127 mile ride along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The race sold out yesterday so Mike and Paula have claimed the last two entry spots. Congrats to Mike and Paula and good luck.
Even though you didn't win, you can still head out to the course and offer some moral support - they're going to need it. And be sure to check out the East Coasters Mountains of Misery website and be sure to register early next year.

Step Back into the 70s
This Wednesday (May 26) marks the last in a
series of four Wednesday Night Disco mountain bike events. Technically it is a race, but for
those who have attended will tell you it's more about the gathering than the
actual race.
You can actually win without coming in
first. Heck, you can win even if you aren't racing. How? By dressing in
your best disco attire. Points are given to those who dress "to the
max" and thanks to Walkabout Outfitter the best dressed on May 26 will
walk away with this righteous Mountain Hardware backpack. In addition to the pack, Roanoke
Outside will be there - racing and giving out water bottles to jive
talking turkeys. Come join the fun!
Special thanks goes out to Skip
Huffman,
Paul Chapman, and the Roanoke Parks & Recreation department for having
the vision to pull this off. Nice job!
Details:
Time: 5:15-6pm registration
Where: Mill Mountain Park (Discovery
Center - AKA Disco Center)

Happy Hour Paddle The weather is staying nice and the water
is getting warm which means it is time to head to the James River for
some paddling. If you've never been on the James River
before, shame on you! We are very fortunate to have such an amazing
outdoor asset in our own back yard. You can learn more about all of
your James River options (canoeing, kayaking, tubing, and fishing) by
visiting the newly launched Upper James River Water Trail website. Another sign that the water is getting warm
is that fact that the Happy Hour Paddle is
back! Every Thursday you can join Riders Up Outfitters for 1.5-2 hour evening float. $10 gets you a kayak (and
all the gear) and a shuttle to/from the river. If you have your own
boat you get the shuttle for free! This is a fun, family-oriented paddle
open to all. Call Tom (540.862.7999) and he'll set everything up for
you. Be sure to tell him Roanoke Outside sent you. |
