WEEKEND UPDATE
PETE's PICKS
What's my recommendation?Pete Eshelman

First - I would like to personally thank those of you who either ran in, volunteered, or cheered for runners of the inaugural National College Blue Ridge Marathon.  As a founder/co-chair for this event I couldn't have been more pleased.  I stood at the finish line shaking runners hands as they crossed and I cannot begin to tell you how appreciated the runners were of the community support they received. A local runner told me that they are "proud to be a Roanoker today" and I have to echo their sentiment. It was a spectacular day and we cannot wait for next year!

Our army of volunteers (more than 300) contributed directly to the success of this event, so they get an additional "thank you". We'll be looking for more volunteers next year and we hope you'll consider volunteering.  If you'd like some practice, the Gallop 4 The Greenways event is May 8 and they are in need of volunteers.  Click here to learn more.

Thank you Roanoke!

Second - It looks like another busy outdoor weekend. I had such a great time cheering the marathon runners on that I'm recommending it to everyone. There are some races this weekend that are great to just watch (and cheer).  Head to your favorite State Park, do some hiking, biking, boating, or fishing, and while you are there cheer on the competitors.

Get OUTSIDE!

  • Mayor's Bike Ride, Saturday, May 1 at 10:00 a.m.  Starting from Roanoke Parks and Recreation, 210 Reserve Ave.  Join Mayor David Bowers on a 2.5 mile family ride along the Roanoke River Greenway to Downtown Roanoke, where riders can enjoy the Strawberry Festival and Chili Cook-off.  The Blue Ridge Bicycle Club will also offer their annual Bicycle Friendly awards.  Sponsored by the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club.
Visit www.bikeroanoke.com/events for more information on these and other events.

The Bike Month mission is to bring attention to both the opportunities and challenges of bicycling as recreation and transportation in the Roanoke Valley by creating events that involve all interest, skill, and age level of cyclists.   To support the region's move towards certification under the League of American Bicyclist's Bicycle Friendly Community Designation, events are aligned with the six E's of Bicycle Friendly Communities: Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, Engineering, Evaluation, and Equity.
