pete's picks
What's my recommendation?
I'm loving this weather - it is
definitely spring and it is time to get outside!- On Saturday - grab the kids, friends, dogs, etc. and head up to the Blue Ridge Parkway to help plant some seedlings. The goal is to plant 500 seedlings, which will eventually help to protect the parkway view shed. Click here to learn more.
- On Sunday - join the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club for an easy hike to Harveys Knob. This hike is open to all but you need to RSVP. Click here to learn more.
- On Tuesday - if you live in the Blacksburg area and/or enjoy the Pandapas Pond (Poverty Creek) trail system, please consider joining us for some simple trail repairs. Click here to learn more.
- And be sure to get your tickets to the "Race Across The Sky" movie. It is phenomenal and will sell out.

Gallop 4 The Greenways - May 8
The Carilion Clinic Gallop 4 The Greenways is an annual
fundraising event to support our growing network of pedestrian and bike
friendly trails. The 4th annual Gallop 4 the Greenways will be held on
May 8th in Elmwood Park in downtown Roanoke. Mark your calendars
today and join us in supporting one of the most important quality of
life assets in the Roanoke Valley.
Why are greenways so important?
Greenways improve the quality of life in a community by providing
recreational opportunities, and promoting the preservation of natural
areas that might otherwise be lost to development. Greenways also play
an important role in economic development by aiding in recruitment
efforts and promoting a healthy workforce. Roanoke is committed to our
local greenways, and completion of the Conceptual Greenway Plan will be a
vital catalyst for change in the Roanoke Valley. You can do your part
to make the plan a reality by participating in the 2010 Gallop 4 The
Greenways. We look forward to seeing you there.
Net proceeds from the event go to
Pathfinders for Greenways, whose members to maintain existing trails,
and build new greenways throughout the Roanoke Valley. Membership in
Pathfinders is open to anyone, please visit their website to learn more.

Photo Contest Winners
A few weeks ago Massanutten Resort
provided us with some tickets to give away. We thought it would be great
if people submitted photos of themselves playing outside. We had a lot
of really great submissions - from people sledding and snowboarding in
their backyard to dirty dogs to biking and fishing. We printed out all
the pictures and had an office vote. Below are the winners. Each will
receive a pair of tickets to Massanutten Resort, good for a day of
skiing, a round of golf, or a day at the indoor water park.
Stay tuned for our next contest - coming up
soon!
